AOL Instant Messenger and OE

Cracker Jacks

I have a very annoying problem that I can not figure out how to resolve. I
am running WinXP home with multiple user accounts enabled. The problem is
AOL IM. It is installed because of the user accounts uses it. I do not use
it but it keeps forcing itself to be my default IM when I start Outlook
Express. I have tried to change this in Outlook Express, Windows XP and in
the messenger itself but it keeps coming back. I suspect because the other
user account is making it their default IM which is somehow re-setting OE.
Besides deleting this monster, how can I set it to not be my Default IM no
matter what the other users do (I wish I could delete it, but that is not at
option). This has been going for months now. I have even emailed the AOL
folks who blew the standard settings at me which do not help. I think AOL
has gone to far to force it's messenger on people's desktop.

uninstall it and when you install it there is a option
whether to make it you default messenger

Try this approach:

From OE menu: Tools | Options | General [tab]. Under the General section, uncheck "Automatically log on to AIM Instant Messenger".

It doesn't change the default settings but it stops it from starting when OE is launched.

My Aim> Edit options> edit prefrences> sign/off page > at
the bottom > check box> make AIM my default Messenger

Did it shut down and re-started OE and AOL IM still came up. It was not
even set as my default messenger. Is there any way to removed AOL from OE
completly (menus and all)? That would work since the other user accounts do
not use OE.

Try this approach:

From OE menu: Tools | Options | General [tab]. Under the General section,
uncheck "Automatically log on to AIM Instant Messenger".

It doesn't change the default settings but it stops it from starting when OE
is launched.

Very strange indeed. I did a Google search and found this discussion of the same problem:

FAQ | Sever Instant Messenger link to Outlook Express
http://www.philly.com/mld/inquirer/business/5778569.htm

That's as much as I know about it.

Someone or something just tried to email me the I-worm/Swen A virus. It's in
a email that looks like an official update from Mircrosoft as a January 02
Windows update.

That is a hoax Email and did not come from Microsoft. Microsoft does not,
repeat DOES NOT send you Email containing attachments unless it is by prior
arrangement. Delete anything containing an attachment that purports to be from
MS. The next rule is never open attachments you are not expecting and in
particular from an unknown source. Even faked "bounce" messages from Postmaster
can contain a virus.

You've received that probably due to using your real e-mail address when posting to these newsgroups. Expect to get a lot more of the same...you're on a list now.

That should stop'em! But your original addy is probably still on a list that's being passed around. If Verison.net has good filters for known spammers, you won't get much junk, but if you do, follow the suggestions outlined in the MS article on e-mail & privacy.
