AOL and Registry Cleaner

I am getting the "debug" "send micorosft report" error box whenever I access
"system information" within AOL (by clicking from toolbar icon or from the
start menu). So I can not access the system information dialogue box of AOL.
IBM tech says to buy a registry cleaner software and run it.

I did some google and ran couple of free scans that did some repair and some
not (needed to pay for further repair). I tried 3 or 4 and ran them, but the
original problem still exists.

How do I fix the "system information" dialogue box" error in AOL? Any free
run? Thanks

Forget AOL and use XP's System Information (msinfo32.exe).

Start | Run | Type: msinfo32 | Click OK

Unless, of course, AOL has screwed up msinfo32.exe.

That's unbelievably poor advice.

You're lucky that your computer still boots, after running three
different registry "cleaners!"

Get rid of the cause of the problem: AOL.

AOL is my broadband internet service. I can not get rid of them-they have
treated me well over the years. How do I fix the registry then?

I wasn't aware that AOL provided any broadband service at all; normally
one gets the broadband service from a local cable television or
telephone company, and then connects to AOL's service. Also, be advised
that AOL is not really an ISP; rather, it's an on-line content provider
that insulates and isolates it's customers from the real internet.
Granted, many people do like to be protected from the outside world, so
it may be that AOL meets your needs.

I can not get rid of them-they have
treated me well over the years.

You'd be the first person I've ever heard make that claim, but, if so,
good for you.

Absolutely nothing you've said indicates that there is anything at all
wrong with your registry. The only error you've reported indicates a
problem with AOL's software.

I'm afraid you'll need to contact AOL's tech support for resolution
of problems with (or caused by) their product; Microsoft has no
control over AOL's product quality.

You do not need AOL software to access broadband (cable), as Bruce has
pointed out.

The only advantage to having AOL software, that I see, would be if you
travel a lot, take your machine with you and have a dialup modem. Having
AOL software would allow you to access the internet (AOL) through dialup at
motels that did not offer broadband internet access. You could still access
your E-mail or whatever on dialup. Since almost any decent motel offers
free broadband internet access with the rooms anymore this may be a moot
point.
