It turns out my host server doesn't support the .htaccess file, and
apparently neither does Front Page. Is there any other way to redirect pages
using Front Page?

sure, there are tons of ways.
what situation are you trying to do a redirect for, what server side
scripting is allowed/supported on your server?

It's a possible solution to my problem with having published my site 11 days
ago with 3 folder names having spaces. Before I corrected the folder names,
Google partially indexed the site. The google link to the main page is ok,
but google addresses for pages inside these folders are all wrong and lead
to 404s.

I'm using Readyhosting - when I called to ask about a 301 redirect with a
..htaccess file they said they didn't support this. Didn't offer any other
solutions.

I tried a test metarefresh from a page in an old folder to a page in the
new - and it does work fine at least at DSL speed. But it won't fix the
wrong address listings. And it might cause a search engine to think I'm
using special entrance pages or something. (I'm not.)

I could call the host tech support again and ask about other scripts.

Thanks. I do have a custom 404 page. Someone suggested I put the whole site
map on it altho that might be excessive. Right now there's a prominent link
to the site map. And I added a short explanation of what I did that caused
some problems.

Oh, ok. I thought it was every 6 weeks to 2 months, and that they still
might not pick up the changes. In that case, probably redoing the custom
error page a bit is probably my best bet. Thanks a lot.

The meta refresh method is okay with search engines as long as there's a
bit of a pause so that visitors can see they are being redirected. I
have seen recommendations for up to 30 seconds as a minimum but the most
common is 10 seconds and using that I have never had a problem.

Thanks. That's very useful information.
