Any good freeware/opensource video editing software out there?

Can anyone recommend any good video editing software. Doesn't have to be
state-of-the-art, just maybe one step above Windows Movie Maker.

I guess you are not smart enough to understand the OP. He asks for
'freeware/opensource' .

This is one area that there are no good freeware solutions. Lots of people
recommend virtualdub but I find it has a clunky interface. It's not meant
for video editing anyway -- it's meant more for video processing (mostly
cleaning up) and it's only marginally capable at that.

I can't recommend any commercial products here but for less than $100 (and
often much less) you can get a commercial product that will be easier to use
and produce more consistent output that freeware products. Google the
newsgroups and you'll discover which products are recommended.

BTW, why don't you like Movie Maker? It's very good and would normally be my
first choice as an editor after my commercial product.

Just lacks one or two functions that I need, as I will be using it for
putting together climbing videos, etc.
Will check around a bit more though.
Thanks for the tips.

Well, you can find some freeware/open source editors at :

http://www.videohelp.com/tools?s=17#17
http://www.videohelp.com/tools?s=8#8
http://www.videohelp.com/tools?s=107#107
http://www.videohelp.com/tools?s=108#108

The above links at Videohelp.com lists freeware/open
source/commerical/shareware programs. Each program is listed as what it
is. For example, freeware is listed as freeware & Open source is listed
as Free Software while shareware/commerical is listed as Trialware &
commerical software as Payware. This makes it easier to find
freeware/open source software on Videohelp.com.

Videohelp.com is the premiere video website. Has tools for making
DVD's, backing up DVD's, audio encoders, MPEG-1/MPEG-2 encoders, Divx
Software, et al.

Hey been using Windows Movie Maker some more and it's actually not a bad
little program.
Do you know if there is anyway to save in a format other than .wmv?
Also from the list of options they offer you what is the best option
(quality) to use if you are planning on making a DVD movie?
from what I have worked out, DV-AVI (PAL) will give you the highest quality?

Tol' ya' so.

Yes, it will save to AVI, but IIRC the file sizes get pretty big fast. (PAL
= Europe, no? Here in North America the standard is NSTC or somthing like
that).

It's been awhile but I recall you could get a free tool from Microsoft for
creating your own video output avi profiles where you could specify
different frame sizes, compression ratios, that sort of thing. It was called
Media Encoder something or other.

Some great resources with tips, tweaks and filters:
