BitDefender Free Edition v7

http://www.bitdefender.com/bd/site/products.php?p_id=24

Features:

Centralized management console
Benefiting from previous experience, the new BitDefender Free Edition was
designed with a centralized management console, which allows protection
options configuration for all BitDefender modules. It is enough to open the
management console in order to have access to all modules: Virus Scan,
Scheduler, Live! Update, Quarantine, Reports.

System scanning
On demand scanning - Powerful scan engines ensure detection and removal of
all viruses in the wild every time you need it.

Scheduled scanning
You can schedule the checking of your system at any time, periodically,
without any other intervention.

Immediate scanning
With just a right click you can check your files and folders.

Automatic and manual update
Intelligent update of antivirus protection, without your intervention. The
update can be done from the network over the Internet, directly or through
a Proxy Server. You may also check the existence of an upgrade or update,
at any moment you'd like.

Skinable interface
You can express yourself, designing new interfaces, or you can use those
designed by others.

File Quarantine
By isolating the infected files in quarantine, the risk of getting infected
diminishes. You also have the possibility to send these files for further
analysis to BitDefender Labs.

Report File
When launching a scan you may choose to create a report file where you can
see statistics about the scan process.

Free Human Technical Support
Provides 24/24 e-mail, chat and phone human technical support.

I've just installed BitDefender Free 7.2

First impression: Bitdefender Free likes to phone home. My firewall reports
the following BitDefender executables wanting to connect to Softwin
servers:

bdmcon.exe - probably the life update engine
bdnews.exe - unknown
bdlite.exe - unknown

Any experienced Bitdefender users here who can shed some light on this?

Thanks,
Jim

Some people hate this remailer so badly that, for example, they did not hesitate to celebrate the death of 148 French tourists in a plane crash.
Those people seceded from the human race, so don't hesitate to report them directly to the police.

nothing is listed regarding 'real-time' scanning. that is the most
important part for me... is this 'free version' crippleware?

If you urgently need a virus guard in the background: Yes, it is
crippled. Otherwise, it is just liteware and less bloated. ;)

Avast and AntiVir PE both offer a real time scanner, you are probably
better of with one of those.

bye,

Onno

"

Probably these cause some of the connections you are seeing.

thanks onno. i'm using the 'free for one year' etrust ezarmor security
suite available at http://www.my-etrust.com/microsoft/ for both my a/v
and firewall. the firewall is just a re-branded zone alarm, but
between it and my hardware firewall i feel pretty safe...

i realize that its not *true freeware, but i'll use it until it
expires. one year is a pretty decently-sized 'trial' and hopefully by
the time it expires there will be a freeware a/v solution available
that is actually worth using. i've not been happy with the ones out
there at this time...

peace!

then it is crippleware. no?...

No, it is a AV-scanner, period. Of course we would like free real time
protection, but not offering it does not make it crippleware.

The AV-scanner works just fine, with free and working online update
of signature files (and engine I guess). I use it my self as a second
scanner, running AVG 6 for real time protection - and then once in a
while turn off AVG - and run BitDefender to scan all my drives.
Anything AVG did not find/capture BitDefender hopefully will, and the
other way around.

All the best,
Bjorn Simonsen

Just realizes I replied to a week old question that had already been
answered. Sorry (wrong sort order).
