AntiVir Guard update

G

Glenn

I have been fighting a bug that I finally fixed by turning off AntiVir
Guard. I update it regularly so it isn't that. 6.3 version and updated 5
min ago.

See an email to an MS forum below of what it was doing.

Running a P4 /w 2.2 G and 512M memory.

OE6 6.00.2900.2180 (XPSP_SP2_rtm.040803-2158)

I have mine set up with the list of subjects on top and the "From: To: and
Subject" window on the bottom half. Always have and assume it is standard
with most folks. When I reply to a post, it used to just send and return me
to the post I was replying to. Now it erases the top window except for the
little squares showing where the subjects WERE. It hangs up there until I
click a different folder (newsgroup) and then go back to my original one
(like yours) and it will list normally again except it starts at the top
again and I have to scroll down to the post I was replying to. What has
changed? I have run 6 different virus finders and none of them find
anything. I just checked and I have all the MS updates.
********************************
As I said, killing AntiVir fixed it and I had been using it for several
years.

As a LONG time user of Anti-Vir, I have run into very few issues. I
will admit I do not use OE at all (although my lovely wife does). I
much prefer Xnews as news client.

Anti-Vir has in the past, give me a fit with Moz mail, giving false
positives on mails and "locking" up my mailbox for a few minutes. I set
the scanner settings a little to high and it was finding a lot of
suspected folders that no other program found. These were false
positives.

Check "OPtions | Configuration | Unwanted Programs ands see if PMS is
selected. This was checked for me and was giving me fits because it is
more paranoid than I am :)

The e-mail monitor of any antivirus software should be
deactivated, or if possible, never installed in the first place.
It is unncessary and prone to problems.

I disagree with your advice! A few days ago I received an infected
E-Mail from some unknown sender and the AVG E-Mail Scanner CAPed it
before it got to the In-Box, so I disagree with your advice, and
recommend enabling the E-Mail Scanner in your AntiVirus Program.

If I understand the way Anti-Vir works, it does not monitor your e-mail
per se, but the file the mails are saved to. AVG scans e-mail, Anti-Vir
technically does not.

No thanks. It blocks MailWasher from connecting. I get rid of any
suspicious e-mails before they get anywhere near my computer.

Everybody gets viruses in their e-mail all the time. Big deal. You
don't open attachments that are sent to you via e-mail. That's all
there is to it. And you don't have your browser or e-mail client
set up to run them automatically for you. Just delete the trash
that comes into your mail box. Garbage in -- garbage out. You
don't need some antivirus client telling you, "Look what I found!
A virus! A virus!"

That is only partially true. Some "virii" are actually javascript and
if you are not careful with the settings on your mail reader, you could
execute the code and do some real damage. I personally only accept
plain text e-mail, but there are many who do not subscribe to this
theory.

Also, we have spouses and / or children who do not follow the same
logical thought that we "tech heads" do, so they can rally FUBAR a
machine if it is not really locked down or protected.

You have to remember that not everyone thinks like you or me, so our
common sense is not so common to some others.

YMMV.
