anti-virus for a non-profit organization?

Hi folks,

I've found some anti-virus freeware that is labelled as being approved
for home use only.
For example: "Use of AVG Free Edition within any organization or for
commercial purposes is strictly prohibited."

Can someone recommend an antivirus that can ethically be used at a
nonprofit organization?

Thank you very much!

The only one that comes to mind is ClamAV. If you wanted to use
something else, you would need to contact the vendor. You may be
surprised on what they might say.

Here's a partial solution:

"Institutions (even non-commercial ones) are not allowed to use
avast! Home Edition. However, ALWIL Software provides the full
line of avast! antivirus products at special discount prices for
non-profit, charity, educational and government institutions.
Please see our price lists for details.

"Using our free avast! 4 Home Edition is not allowed in a
non-profit organization however, we do offer a special discount.
The discount is 50% off the list price for an educational or
non-profit organization and 30% off the list price for a health
or government institution."

Very happy with Avast here.

Write to them and ask. While they may say "no" they may say "yes".

I agree. It's the only one that's community-developed and completely
free by intention. When I tried it around 9 months ago, I was impressed
by the concept and how far the developers had come. I was also cognizant
that it needed a whole lot more work before I would ever be able to live
with it.

On the negative side, the interface was extremely inflexible and
limited. The performance was agonizingly slow. There was no monitor that
read out how much time the scan would take or remaining time left. I
recall that the scan of my 10mb took 6 hours.

On the positive side, the energy is good. Development is constant. Virus
signatures are released almost every day! Like Spybot S&D, people all
around the world contribute to its currency.

This program bears watching -- it will evolve continuously. Perhaps one
or more people who are good at human interface design (these people are
very rare in my experience) will get at ClamWin -- at that time, this
antivirus will be catapulted over-the-top and it'll be a fine tool.
