Small anti virus updates

S

Suzie K.

I live in a rural area and make use of an extremely slow and expensive
dial up connection. Presently I use AVG Free edition anti virus, however
due to the size of the updates, I struggle to keep my software up to
date. Do any of the other freeware AV have smaller sized updates? Any
suggestion would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in Advance,
Suzie.

*Avast* www.avast.com is a good free antivirus (require free
registration for obtaining serial number and 14 months user-license)
that has incremental updates very smaller (10-20 KB many times) it
download only new definitions not whole database each time like AVG and
ANTIVIR.

download avast and have a fun!

My AVG updates are virtually always "small".
Examples: 10k, 4.4k, 200k
Occasionally there will be a 1-2 Meg update or
an program upgrade of 3 Megs or so.
I don't know why yours would be otherwise.

I agree. I have the free for non-commerical use Avast Home edition &
the updates are very small.

The only time that you get a large download is when it updates the scan
engine but it is usually just about 1 MB+ for the scan engine updates.

The thing which I like about Avast is the automatic update which will
connect to the Avast server when it detects that your online to see if
an update is avaliable, if one is, it gets downloaded.

Same here. I have a total of 21 AVG update files on my computer. They total
2.25MB in size. This is over a 13 day period, so that is less than 200kb
per day. I can still remember my dialup days, and when I was estimating how
long a download would take I used to allow 15MB per hour, so 200kb per day
doesn't sound to bad to me. :)

Suzie -
AVG update sizes vary with the type of update (and the frequency with which
you do the update!) under normal circumstances, the updates are between 20
and 100 KB - not excessive.

For program updates, I believe the largest I've seen is around 6MB

Compare that with some of the others out there (Norton, for instance, has
something like 50MB to download once you install NAV!, or did, last time I
was forced to try it.)

Could someone provide the link to download the "AVG Free" editon
please?
Thanks...
