Another cross-reference question

T

Terri

My document has an outline, i.e., level 1: "Section 1.?"

Later in my document I want to pull the number out of my outline,i.e., only
the 1 and reference it in a different text paragraph. I need to keep the
word "section" in my outline as it is also pulled into a style generated
table of contents.

Any assistance would be appreciated.

Thanks.

Assuming that the paragraph has auto numbering applied, you can create a
cross-reference to it, using the Cross-reference dialog box. For "Reference
type," choose "Numbered item," and for "Insert reference to," choose
"Paragraph number."

To open the Cross-reference dialog box:

- On the Insert tab, click Cross-reference (Word 2007).

- On the Insert menu, click Reference, and then click Cross-reference (Word
2003).

Note that if you want to suppress the word "Section" in a cross-reference,
you'll have to edit the underlying field code. Press Alt+F9 to show field
codes. Something like this will display:

{ REF _Ref223409652 \r \h }

Add the \t switch to the field code (after \h), press F9 to update, and
press Alt+F9 again to hide field codes.
