Another Continous Reboot Problem

T

Tom B.

This is getting tiresome. I would say Microsoft has a serious reboot
problem based on all the previous reboot posts. Let me add mine.

Brand new A-Open microATX w/fully integrated MB. The machine runs
Win98 just fine. Did a clean install of Win2000 SP4 and machine
immediately started doing continous reboots. Turned off the Automatic
Reboot thing under Startup & Recovery and now the machine will boot to
a Blue Screen of Death (BSOD) with a "***STOP: - several numbers -
PFN_LIST_CORRUPT message.

If you turn on the Automatic Reboot and let the machine reboot 6-8
times, will sometimes stop at the "Start Menu" screen before
unpredictably going into continous reboot again.

There is no virus (unless the Microsoft CD is infected). The machine
O.S. was loaded from a genuine Microsoft O.S. CD.

I'd sure like to see the MVP's get the word out and get this problem
fixed soon.

Thanks -

Can you boot to Safe Mode? If so, take a look at Knowledge Base article
291806 How to Troubleshoot a "STOP 0x0000004E PFN_LIST_CORRUPT" Error
Message (http://support.microsoft.com/?id=291806). Do you have any
anti-virus software running on the system and if so, was it running when you
installed the Service Pack and updates?

Thanks for the reply. I'm familiar with 291806. This is a new machine
with virtually no software loaded. The motherboard uses the Intel
845GV chip set with an ICH4-A1 sourh bridge. All Intel drivers for
this board are loaded. Under System Information > Sortware Environment
Drivers > Status, all drivers show O.K. Under Components > Problem
Devices, No Problem Devices.

The machine runs fine on both Win 98 SE and XP-Pro (clean installs).
The O.S. was loaded (clean install) from an MS CD that included SP4.
I'd like to back out the service pack but I don't see an option to do
that.

The clean installs are for the C: drive. The machine has four logical
drives set up on one physical drive (80 Gig total).

I've heard that Win2000 was a reasonably stable product. It sure
doesn't appear to be the case now. Any help appreciated.

Would it help to disable the Virus protection in the BIOS?
