Always ask before opening this type of file

It used to be that when i clicked on links to lectures in my uni site a
message would come up prompting me whether i wanted to save/open/cancel with
a check box down the bottom saying "Always ask before opening this type of
file". Somebody unckecked this box and now i do not have to option to 'save'
and i do not know how to check the box again. If somebody could tell me how
to re-check this box it would be much appreciated as for the life of me i
cant figure it out myself >_< Thanks......

Unfortunately the information in that page relates to internet explorer 5 and
involved altering the registry - Does anyone know if there is any other way
to solve the problem, or if it is still ok to alter my registry even though i
have IE6 and not 5?

To get the download dialog box, enable the "confirm open after download"
option for that file type:

1. Open Windows Explorer
2. Then click [Tools] [Folder Options] [File Types]
3. Scroll down to locate the file type.
4. Highlight the file type (example :"PPT Microsoft PowerPoint
Presentation")
5. Click the "Advanced" button.
6. Enable the option "confirm open after download"

You set this for each file type, e.g. for .zip
Explorer-View-Folder Options-File Types
Find the .zip association (may be WinZip File)
Edit, (or click Advanced on ME or XP) and check the "Confirm open
after download" box

The path to Folder Options may vary according to your operating
system. It may be:
Explorer-View-Folder Options
Explorer-Tools-Folder Options
Start-Settings-Folder Options
Start-Settings-Control Panel-Folder options.
