Alternates between AC and Battery power

F

fornewsgroups

my laptop keeps "switching" to battery power even though the AC power
cord is securely attached to the computer. I then just simply unattach
then reinsert the cord. Although Compaq think it is a hardware issue I
find this hard to believe since if I try to purposely "loosen" it it
does not switch to battery. IT just seems to happen randomly.

The timing is such that it seems to be a recent windows update.

Suggestions? Thoughts?

I did find this post which describes a similar issue:
http://www.howardforums.com/showthread.php?p=6621443#post6621443 .
(although I do not have a separate charger).

This probably has nothing to do with Windows but as the Compaq tech
support people suggested, is a hardware fault. The random nature of the
problem in particular suggests hardware issues. It is likely that the
charger component on the motherboard is failing and the motherboard
will need to be replaced. Call Compaq tech support back and make
arrangements to have this fixed.

It's a hardware problem.

Thank you for the resposnse. Another fellow who had this issue, said
it went away after he reformatted his computer.

I onder if my issue culd have been as simple my AC adapter not being
100% connected to the big black part (brain fart), that goes to the
wall? I checked it and was able to move it in about 2 mm.
Is that possible? So far a couple of hours later, the "alternating"
power issue hasn't re-occured.

Well, scratch that. It doesn't seem to be the AC adaptor. I'm gonna
perform a rapir f windows. Failing that, reformat.
Ideas and suggestions are still welcome.

I thought it obvious since it was directly above (i.e. if you follow
the thread, it's clear).
But here you go:

Well, I did a repair of the operating system (windows xp home), and the
problem seems to be in check,
I don't get it, but again so far so good. If it changes I'll post it
here. But if anyone else having this issue, try a repair of the OS.

Sigh,
scratch the repair remedy. At first it seemed to work as it didn't
"switch" for hours and hours. But turning it on this morning, it
STARTED on battery power even though the AC power was connected. I'll
next attempt a reformat.

OK, scratch the scratch. This is the longest it hasn't "switched"
over. So maybe it has "healed"?
