Paul,
You're welcome .... glad to see you have things resolved.

The first thing to do is to scan your system for the possibility of
unknown\unwanted spyware or parasites that may be causing your problem(s).

That's a bizarre one!
Thanks for the suggestion, but I don't like Notepad much and rarely use
it.
No shortcuts.
The first reference you listed suggested deleting "unknown" objects from
downloaded files. I found two of those and deleted them; we'll see what
that
does. I also found TWO apparently identical copies of Java Runtime. I
wonder
whether I should delete one of them?
This machine suffers from other problems too, in particular various
errors -
several different types - on shutdown. Maybe I should just reinstall
Windows. Lot of work though. I don't want to wipe and reinstall
everything,
because that would take a whole day at least.
Thanks again for your suggestions.
Paul,
In some rare cases a Notepad shortcut on the Desktop will cause this
also.

OK, I tried that too. It worked for only two days this time.
This is driving me crazy!
OK, I'll try that too. Thanks!
Your index must be very big. Remove it completely. IE will

new one with for your new cache.

OK, I tried the suggestion, reduced my cache to 50 MB. It
worked
fine -
for
four days! Now it's back to untitled.bmp again.
