AIM works but IE does not

I have cable modem.
AIM comes up and logs in without a problem.
When I start IE and go to any web site (like
http://www.cnn.com or http://www.yahoo.com) I get the
following error:
"Cannot find server" in the title bar
"The page cannot be displayed"...
"the page you are looking for is currenly unavailable. The
Web site might be experiencing technical difficulties, or
you may need to adjust your browser settings"

I have the updated virus list and scanned the computer.
No viruses found.

Any help would be appreciated. Thank!

Maybe your nameserver isn't setup properly. Try going to an ip address like
http://216.239.51.100/ (google). Also, try pinging google, from the command
prompt type "ping 216.239.51.100". If this is the case, then check with your
cable company for that information. Otherwise, install Netscape 7. ;-)

Are you using a broadband router? firewall? proxy? anything else that may
cause problems?

Thanks for the insight Miguel, but I'm not sure how to
setup my "nameserver"... Yes, I can ping the google
address!
However, I tried to put the address into IE and it didn't
work (http://216.239.51.100). Would this still be a
nameserver issue if it can't even resolve the IP address
in the http header? Any additional thoughts?

Thanks Miguel! I can ping the ip address, but when I put
it in the header of IE (http://216.239.51.100) it can't
resolve it! I'm not sure how to setup my nameserver, but
do you think that is still the issue? Thanks again!

That's pretty strange. I'm not sure what it could be. If you can ping
216.239.51.100, but can't reach it from IE, then it probably isn't the
nameserver. Maybe try checking if IE is set to use a proxy server, you
probably don't need that:

IE - Tools - Internet Options - Connections - LAN Settings - See if the
Proxy Server checkbox is unchecked. (If you make changes, remember what you
had before in case that's not the solution).

Have you tried another browser? Maybe your IE is broken. I had my Outlook
Express broken at home for a long time (had to use netscapes mail program),
until I reinstalled XP. If you haven't tried another browser and want to try
it, I would suggest you get Opera (www.opera.com) and just install the free
download version without java (3.1MB). Its a pretty nice browser and it
pretty easy to remove later (unlike IE)

Thanks again. I downloaded opera and gave it a shot and
unfortunately it didn't work. I can use a Lotus Notes
browser and it works. Also, I can use Netscape and it
works. But I'd really like to get back onto IE (personal
preference). Sounds like I might have to reload XP or get
ahold of a MS registry guru to fix this thing! Thanks for
the input!

I like IE better too, but its such a hasle that if something goes bad, you
can't just reinstall IE, or so it seems. I'm just slowly making a transition
to the linux world. It's actually quite fun learning all of the cool
features that I would normally have to buy in the M$ world. It does take a
lot of work though, to use linux. Good luck with your internet.
