Standby is a power saving state. Having an open connection shut down
during this time would not only save power but is more secure.

If it's important to leave AIM active while you're away from the
computer, you may want to temporarily disable Standby. Or change your
power management settings to allow standby for just the monitor.

The only other thing in Windows that I can think of that *might* help is
in Device Manager. Windows XP lets you disallow power management
settings on some devices. Check the properties of the hardware that
maintains your online AIM connection. If there is a Power Management
tab, remove the check in the box next to "Allow the computer to turn off
this device to save power."

Not all programs are compatible with the various power management
states. Check with AIM's tech support to see if they have any
suggestions for maintaining a sustained connection with their program.
