ADSL Modem Connected by Ethernet - PC Won't Boot

I have an Intel D865GLC m/board with P4 2.8GHz, running an Intel 82562
Ethernet Device. Running XP SP1. Recently connected a D-Link 302G (Ver. C1)
ADSL modem via the on-board Ethernet Controller. PC won't boot if modem
attached and powered on. Gets to black Win XP screen with green progress
bars, screen then goes blank, then PC re-boots. Have checked BIOS to make
sure its not trying to use ethernet as a boot device. Have to unplug ethernet
cable to boot PC. Once blue XP Welcome screen comes up, can plug RJ-45 plug
back in and ADSL connection to the Internet works fine. Have swapped modem
with a replacement - same problem. Intel website support very general and not
specific. Custom built PC myself. No other problems. Can't seem to find any
resource in the Windows XP O/S that lets me see if booting from an ethernet
device has been enabled. Is there something I have missed here?

Right-click My Computer, select Properties, then the Advanced tab, then the
Settings button under "Startup and Recovery". Turn off the option to
automatically restart in the event of a system failure. You should now be
able to shut down, connect your modem, and see what error condition it's
generating.

Thanks Richard,

Tried your suggestion; same re-boot with no indication. Thought of something
else to try since my post. My PC boots up ok in Safe Mode, but NOT in Safe
Mode with Networking. Does that give any additonal clues? There were no
deivce drivers loaded with the ADSL modem because of using the Ethernet
Connection option.

PS I pressed "not helpful" in error, thinking that's how I'd get a reply
screen. My apologies, as your suggestion has taken me a step further to
solving my problem and was, therefore, helpful.

Okay, that does indeed bring us a step closer. If you can boot in Safe Mode
but not in Safe Mode with Networking, we need to suspect a problem with the
network card or the network card drivers. I would boot into Safe Mode and
disable the network device (or if it's built into the motherboard, go into
BIOS setup and disable it there instead), then restart normally - just to
confirm that networking is indeed our problem. It seems almost certain but
this test will confirm it.

Once we're sure it's a network card/driver problem the next thing to try
would be either updated drivers or a different network device.

Hi Richard

Finally fixed this problem. Went into Network Connections and on the General
tab under "This connection uses the following items:" I unchecked everything
except Internet Protocol (TCP/IP), and hey presto, it overcame the re-boot on
start-up problem. Thanks for your help and I hope that this feedback might be
of some use to others.
