Adobe taking over .exe files

When I attempt to open an exe file, I get a message about needing a new
version of Adobe Reader. In the Adobe forum, they say to remove a file in
the registry that is causing this. I cannot find anything in the registry
that looks like the culprit. Here is the link to the Adobe forum

Would someone with more experience than I help out on this? Would certainly
appreciate it. Thanks in advance.
