administrator has prohibited access to cd/dvd rom drive

P

Prescott

I get the following message upon boot up: "administrator has
prohibited access to cd/dvd
rom drive". I've checked the relevent registry keys, dowloaded TweakUI
and used that, but nothing I do will restore access to the machine's CD
or DVD drives and yes, I'm loged on as a administrator. Logging on as
the default administrator did nothing for me either.. Any assistance
would be greatly appreciated.

Kindly respond here as there are others who are having this
problem and could benefit from the answer. Thanks.

Start button --> RUN --> secpol.msc --> OK
Look through the Devices: policies... report back on their settings.

Thanks, but I've already been through all that ( saw an earlier message
you posted :) ), the policies are set to allow access to all users, any
other ideas?? This is really annoying, I've never seen anything like
this before. It occured immediately after installing IE 7, but I can't
imagine that would have anything to do with it ... heh, optimisitc
ain't I ... but, one never knows. I'm trying to avoid reformating and
re-installing this system and all the software I've got on it.

Prescott,

I'm at a loss. I wish I had more for you and i hope someone comes along
with an answer...

I would not do a complete re-install in any case without trying a repair
installation first - but I would wait on that too..

Give it a day or two to sit here and marinate and hope someone comes along
with an answer.
It does happen here on occasion. *grin*

Thanks for the reply, I'm not overly optimistic that someone will
figure it out soon enough to help me. This machine may soon enter the
critical need category, forcing me to format and re-install everything
... sigh ...

Here's a shot...
I found a few posts related to installation of some Intel software for
management. See the links if you want more.

A solution from the PCbanter thread is as follows:
Do you have XP Pro? If so, go to the Local Security Policies in the
Administrative Tools. Within the Local Security Policy navigate to:
Security Settings > Local Policies > Security Options > Devices:Restrict
CD_ROM access..." and set the option to Disabled.

XP Home, an registry edit is required.

[HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon]
Locate "allocatecdroms" and set the value to 0.

Hope that works for you.

UPDATE:

Turns out that Intel Desktop Utilities was the problem. I uninstalled
the software and all access to the CD ROMs and floppy drive was
restored. Thank you very much for all your assistance.
