address bar

I used to be able to type:

john smith

in the address bar, press "Go" and the webpages containing
that phrase would get returned.

Now,

john smith

gets replaced by:

http:///? john smith

in the address bar and the

"The page cannot be displayed. The page you are looking
for is currently unavailable. The Web site might be
experiencing technical difficulties, or you may need to
adjust your browser settings" page is always returned.

How can I restore the previous search ability?

Gary,

It seems your address bar is turned off for web searching. Please try
Internet Options > Advanced, and make sure "Do not search from the address
bar" is unchecked or click Restore Defaults button. If that doesn't help,
try Reset Web Settings... in Programs and see if that works.

First eliminate any scumware.

Note that AdAware and SpyBot S & D will each catch some things the other
won't. Also, each needs to be updated before every use, even when just
downloaded. There's also a lot more to do than just those two programs.
CWShredder is also available here:

If trying everything at that site does not fix the problem please post back
in the same thread.
