Address Bar problem in IE

N

Nels Hansen

Grandson running XP Home on nearly new Dell Dimension 4550.

Something has "corrupted" the functioning of his Address Bar in IE.

Following connection in IE and displayed on the Home Page is
<http://start.earthlink.net>. If we try to enter a partial address to go
to, for instance, google.com, it changes to
<http://vrape.hardloved.com/top/search.php=18s=google.com> and screen says
"The page cannot be displayed" and "Internet Explorer could not open the
search page." Something has been changed in his machine. This happens
every time unless he types in <http://www...etc.>

How do we resolve this?

Thank you for your help!!!

I recommend you look up "home page hijacking" on www.google.com. It
looks like some software you installed, or a web page you visited, has
taken control of where IE lets you go. This is a common problem. One
way to fix this is to install and use a program like AdAware (from
www.lavasoftusa.com). AdAware can help detect and remove programs that
are not viruses, but that do cause unwanted behavior on your computer.

Barry, thank you for your advice; I'll give AdAware a try tomorrow morning
and report the results.

Again, thank you for your trouble!

Good morning, Kelly:

Hmmm. Just now found your 8/23/03 post on Google - don't know why it has
not shown up in this group yet. However, I need a little more guidance, if
you please: Your post today says line 229 and the 8/23 post says run line
245 (right hand side).

Should I do both? If only one, which one?

Thank you for your trouble!
