Address bar issue

XP Pro Ser PK 2, IE with latest updates. Issue is intermittent; Open IE and
if I try to type in an address as soon as I start typing the address bar
disapears and the window kinda maximixes. I can go to the search window and
by searching a website like ups.com of whatever IE sometimes settles down and
performs correctly. When this is occuring I also have a similar issue with
Windows explorer in that when I open it, it opens then the window maximixes
then restores down over and over again...like a strobe. I can get it to stop
by going to window task manager and ending all svchost.exe system processes.
Sometimes this will also "fix" the IE problem. One more thing when this is
occuring; an Access 2003 database I use malfunctions if either issue with IE
or EXPL is present. Tried all spyware etc....
Anyone ever have this issue?

Hi Paul :)

Try the following and see if it helps. Even if you have already run some
programs, run them again according to the instructions in the information
below to thoroughly clean you system. Some variants of malware can
replicate itself and return repeatedly if not cleaned properly. It is best
to read through all the information before you start to know before hand
what you need to do and how. Follow all instructions to letter as much as
possible.

WARNING>>>> Backup all documents and files before removing any spyware!!

First., download and install BHODemon from
http://www.definitivesolutions.com/bhodemon.htm
Your problem may be caused by a bad BHO.

If this does not resolve the problem, the do the following:

Dealing with Unwanted Spyware and Parasites:

What You Should Know About Spyware
http://www.microsoft.com/athome/security/spyware/devioussoftware.mspx
What you can do about spyware and other unwanted software
http://www.microsoft.com/athome/security/spyware/spywarewhat.mspx
Most importantly, be sure to run CWShredder here
http://www.majorgeeks.com/download3019.html
Also this program searches for hidden .dlls that recreate the malware.
About Buster:

Then visit these two sites to test for parasites and help basic cleaning:
On-Line Check
http://aumha.org/a/noads.htm
and
Quick-Fix Protocol.

Basically, throw everything here at your "infection".

Also download and install HiJackThis -

to allow the experts there to evaluate your log and advise you of any
necessary steps to clean your system.

follow all posting instructions carefully to avoid having your log deleted
or ignored.

CAUTION!!!!! Before you try to remove spyware using any of the programs
below, download a copy of LSPFIX from any of the following sites:
http://www.cexx.org/lspfix.htm
http://www.spychecker.com/program/winsockxpfix.html
(if your OS is Win2k or XP) The process of removing certain malware may kill
your internet connection. If this should occur, this program, LSPFIX, will
enable you to regain your connection.

You should also get a copy of WINSOCKXPFIX available at:
http://www.spychecker.com/program/winsockxpfix.html
and
WinsockXP Fix- WinXP
http://www.spychecker.com/program/winsockxpfix.html
with instructions, at
http://www.iup.edu/house/resnet/winfix.shtm
also... From LavaSoft- all versions of Windows-
http://digital-solutions.co.uk/lavasoft/whndnfix.zip
(NOTE: It is reported that in XP SP2, the command netsh winsock reset
will fix this problem without the need for these programs.)
or Winsock Fix Utility
http://www.dfwonline.net/files/WinsockFix.zip

NOTE: If you can not download these programs from the Internet, if your PC
has CD read capabilities, go to another computer with CD-ROM burning
capabilities. Create a folder on the hard drive of the other computer called
HOLD, download the programs to that folder, then burn that folder to a CD.
Copy the HOLD folder to your HD and then install the programs from there
and run them. After you have IE access again, update all programs where
possible to get the latest definitions and run them again in Safe Mode to be
sure there are no lingering items on the system.

Hope this helps

Thanks Jan....lots to try but I'll give it a shot. I've had this issue for
several years, 3 different computers, Win 98 2nd E, Win 2000 Pro, and total
rebuilds, motherboard up, of which 2 are operational and for some reason the
older machine has not acted up since I loaded Office Pro 2003. I thought
that I might have had a font that was the root problem because that's about
the only commom thread between the two machines. ( about 500 fonts on each)
Wife is a photographer and artist.....likes lots of fonts.....anyway when O-P
03 loaded on older machine it updated my Office-97 and Publisher02 and
deleted a bunch of fonts. Oh well thanks for the advise...I'll try this week

If you by chance did a backup at some point of your system or the Fonts, you
could perhaps find the ones that are now missing and copy them back into the
Fonts folder. I do graphics work, and I use a lot of fonts as well, but, I
found that having too many fonts installed will cause problems, so I keep
some of those that I don't use too often backed off to another driver, or a
CD. I use a font manager for my major fonts too, FontList:
http://www.bitstorm.org/fontlist/

It is possible that some types of fonts are not totally compatible, or a
font may have become corrupt. Here is a very interesting site that will
help explain the fonts limitations and other factors that can cause problems
in Windows for various versions, and how to avoid font related problems.
http://graphicssoft.about.com/od/aboutgraphics/a/fontoverload.htm
There is a list of font managers for Windows as well.

Hope this helps

Hi Jan!

Lots of snow again this weekend. Need Spring fast!!!!!!!!!!!!
No luck with anything. I can recreate the problem that occurs by opening
either IE or windows Explorer and holding done the F11 key. In the view menu
for IE F11 is for full screen. When the PC is acting up it is toggleing back
and forth just as if I am holding down the F11 key. Weird or what?
