Thank you for your response Gerry. Here is the additional info you
requested.

Event Type: Error
Event Source: Service Control Manager
Event Category: None
Event ID: 7026
Date: 30/05/2009
Time: 9:40:39 AM
User: N/A
Computer: PROMPT
Description:
The following boot-start or system-start driver(s) failed to load:
PCIIde
ViaIde

For more information, see Help and Support Center at
http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/events.asp.

=======================

Computer:
Pentium 4 CPU 3.06 GHz
3.06 GHz 1.0 GB of RAM

========================
Commite Charge
Total: 600504
Limit: 4089012
Peak: 844344
=======================

Gerry, While I am not an expert I am by no means a novice. This one
really has me stumped. None of my other programs seems to be effected.
Other games (eg. TW Golg 2008 play with no problems). I have tried
adjusting settings in FSX to the minimum with no joy. (settings don't
seem to effect the freeze problem).

I certainly appreciate your response and look forward to any suggestions
you may have

Thanks,
Bill Bishop

I suspect you are not alone. Google has a lot of posts.

Are any devices malfunctioning? Select Start, All Programs, Accessories,
System Tools, System Information. Open Components under System Summary
and click on Problem Devices. Is anything listed there?

Are there any yellow question marks in Device Manager? Right click on
the My Computer icon on your Desktop and select Properties,
Hardware,Device Manager. If yes what is the Device Error code?

Hope this helps.

Thanks again Gerry. I've scanned the posts you provided but did not
come up with anything helpful (other than to realize others have a
similar issue). There are several excellent posts on SimForums by NickN
which I followed when I reinstalled (for the third time) my FSX with
Acceleration. FYI here are the URL's:

http://www.simforums.com/forums/forum_posts.asp?TID=29041

http://www.simviation.com/cgi-bin/yabb2/YaBB.pl?num=1208959973

I have NO conflicting or problem devices shown in SysInfo, nor no
problems shown in my Hardware Device Manager.

I have searched Microsofts Knowledge Base (what a joke that is) for a
reference to this problem to no avail.

I suspect I cannot take you further with your FSX problem unless the two
drivers are partof that problem.

The two drivers not loading is a strange one. I cannot recall seeing it
being reported that drivers have not loaded, except when systems are
booted to safe mode. The implication is that something is requesting the
drivers but either they are not present on your system or there is
something wrong with the drivers. You can use Autoruns to see if there
are start up items for pciide.sys and viaide.sys.

To identify what loads when you boot use Autoruns (freeware from
Microsoft).

http://www.microsoft.com/technet/sysinternals/ProcessesAndThreads/Autoruns.mspx

With Autoruns you can uncheck an item, which disables it from
starting,or you can right click an item and then delete it. If you
uncheck youcan recheck to re-enable the item. It is a much safer
approach than editing the Registry and better than using msconfig..
Another useful feature of the programme is that you can right click an
item and select Search Online to get information about the item
selected.

See if the items are there and not disabled.

The second operation is to check whether the files are present the
folder c:\windows\system32\drivers.pciide.sys is a Microsoft file and is
present on most systems including my own. viaide.sys is a third party
driver from Via Technologies.

Gerry,
I wish to thank you for your efforts on my behalf. They are much
appreciated. btw both files are on the system and are shown as up to
date. I will use the Autoruns program to clean up missing file entries
(which may be trying to call the files), explore on the net their uses
(although not much is said about them), and to disable them to what (if
any) effect they have.

Once again thank you very much for your time and effort. If I ever
definitativly (?) resolve the issue I will drop you a note.

With thanks,

Bill Bishop (ww1ace)
