Insufficient resources exist to complete the requested service.

My computer continues to lose available physical memory over the course of
several hours. I have 768MB installed and start out with 4-500MB available.
It runs down to under 200MB and I have to reboot. As memory starts going
away, I start to get the following message when I try to open a program:

Insufficient resources exist to complete the requested service.

I’ve googled the error and checked several sites. I only get results for
the error relating to an API - which I don't see.

I have run Avast Anti-Virus, Trend Micro Anti-Virus, Spybot, Windiag, and
Memtest86 - all showing no problems. Here's the info on my system, an
associated System Event Log entry and a Hijack this log.

It is expected behavior, and by design. Windows XP always uses all memory,
all the time, and only releases it as needed. Your app to look at the
available memory is implying a problem that does not exist in the context of
the XP OS.

This does not happen on any other computer I've seen. Also, over the course
of the few hours that this is occurring, I begin to lose things like my virus
update, the ability to open more than one or two programs, and finally the
inability to log back on if I just log off (not restart). This is not
expected behavior nor is it "a feature".

Mark L. Ferguson said:
It is expected behavior, and by design. Windows XP always uses all memory,

available memory is implying a problem that does not exist in the context of

One of your apps must have a 'memory leak' You might try Process Explorer

What should be looking for when I run this?

One of your apps must have a 'memory leak' You might try Process Explorer

This does not happen on any other computer I've seen. Also, over the course
of the few hours that this is occurring, I begin to lose things like my virus
update, the ability to open more than one or two programs, and finally the
inability to log back on if I just log off (not restart). This is not
expected behavior nor is it "a feature".

Mark L. Ferguson said:
It is expected behavior, and by design. Windows XP always uses all memory,
all the time, and only releases it as needed. Your app to look at the
available memory is implying a problem that does not exist in the context of
the XP OS.

:

An easier to use app for the same thing is:
Software Explorer Windows Defender :

This does not happen on any other computer I've seen. Also, over the course
of the few hours that this is occurring, I begin to lose things like my virus
update, the ability to open more than one or two programs, and finally the
inability to log back on if I just log off (not restart). This is not
expected behavior nor is it "a feature".

:

It is expected behavior, and by design. Windows XP always uses all memory,
all the time, and only releases it as needed. Your app to look at the
available memory is implying a problem that does not exist in the context of
the XP OS.

:

Doesn't anyone trim their posts in this group? I know it's Microsoft's
server, but there is no reason to quote 100's of lines for a short
sentence or two followup. ::just color me grumpy today:: :)

Ok, I think we're getting somewhere. I started in Safe Mode with Networking
and am not seeing the leak. So it's something that runs in normal mode.
Since I'm kinda lazy, is there a way to print the list of running processes
from software explorer so I can narrow down my suspects. I SUPPOSE I can
write them down if I have to. I'll keep you posted.

Q263201 - Default Processes in Windows 2000:
http://support.microsoft.com/support/kb/articles/Q263/2/01.ASP

Look at IE. tools, "Manage Add-Ons" to determine anything that you might
identify as unusual. I would bet, since it's Explorer, that something is
using SVCHOST to go online for some reason.

Defining Services, and their attendant purpose can be confusing. You can
identify the Process ID, and which one runs your online services. What Ports
they use, and so on, but you are going to have to have some reference point
to start from.
How To Determine what Services are Running in WinXP:
http://members.home.net/winhelp98/services.htm

Most people would assume something has installed itself. Recent Update,
Virus, or simply a corrupt file.
As far as printing a file of the list of running processes and services,
there are scripts for that.
List Dependent Services for All Services:
http://www.microsoft.com/technet/scriptcenter/scripts/os/services/ossvvb05.mspx

If you intend to cure it, rather than do a rebuild, or purge of some kind, I
would expect it to be a long hunt. You need to think about "what has changed
lately".

G

Guest

Mark,

Thanks a lot for your efforts. I think I will try to hunt this down as it
will help me to understand services etc. and I also need to see what I really
need to salvage before doing a rebuild. One other curiosity which may be a
logical result of the problem or another clue - as the available physical
memory is decreasing, the Page File Usage number goes up dramatically.

It may take a few days to do the work, but I'll post results when I have them.
