Adding fax number creates new contact record?

When I put a fax number into the contact file in Outlook,
it pulls the fax number in as an email address, but it
also makes a duplicate contact record. Kind of weird
huh? So if I'm emailing someone who had a fax number
entered on the contact sheet, it asks me for the correct
name and shows the two options (with the fax number as the
email). Is there a way to keep this from happening?
