add/remove windows components error

Hi all,

I'm running win xp (media center) on an HP m1195c. There's a 'd' partiion
that has all the software that came with the computer including windows
stored on it. I MAY have used the HP help functionality to create some kind
of windows install disks, but I'm not sure.

I installed IIS to use for a development platform some time ago. Now I want
to remove it so I can install apache. When I open the add/remove programs in
control panel, and click on the 'windows components' button, I get an error
like this:

'setup library filename.dll could not load, or function soemthing could not
be found'

At first, it was a fill named ntdoc.dll (I i think). I did a search for the
file and didn't find it. I found a copy of the file on the net, downloaded
it and placed it in the system32 folder. When I again tried to access the
add/remove windows components portion of the add/remove programs area, I got
the same message but a different filename. I tried adding files (about 12 of
them) until the site I was using didn't have one of the files I needed (and
who knows how many more files would have popped up as missing even if I found
that file). After that, i went back and deleted out all these files that I
had added hopefully returning me to square one.

Does anyone know what may cause something like this? I regularly perform
maintenance on this computer (including after this problem started just in
case) including defrags and spyware sweeps, run a firewall and virus
protection, etc etc.

Windows is, otherwise, functioning as well as it ever did. The only 'issue'
i have is that the screensaver doesn't always run when it should.

Any ideas? I was thinking about reinstalling over windows xp but with no
install disk I'm not sure how that would work (though, presumably, all the
windows files are on the 'd' partition.

Could really use some guidance. Thanks

CW

Hi,

First I would run SFC "System File Checker". Click Start then Run and type:
sfc /scannow

With all the files you replaced this should put back the originals.

If this don't correct your problem try reinstalling IIS over top it's self.
Possibly something has became corrupt with IIS and it will fix your problem
and allow you to uninstall.

All the best,

Thanks for the reply.

I tried the file check thing and all it did was tell me windows was missing
dlls it needs to function properly and to put the xp cd in the dvd drive and,
of course, I don't have an xp disk. All the files for reinstalling windows
are on a 'd' partition of the main harddrive. I'm not given an option to
switch folders/drives.

I'm really not sure how reinstalling IIS would help. The only relation that
IIS has to this issue is that I want to delete it. Even if there is
something wrong I'm not sure why that would prevent me from accessing the
entire 'windows components' area of the add/remove programs.

I think given that everything else is functioning fine I'm now inclined to
try and figure out which services run as a part of IIS and just shut those
down. I'm pretty sure that would allow me to run Apache without
interference. The only other thing I can think of is to do a 'repair
install' and finding the info about how to run that from the 'd' partion
(assumming it's possible) seems to have been treated like a trade secret...

I do appreciate your response,
CW
