Add / Remove Programs list showing wrong icons

M

mhajii210

I have searched the various newsgroups and I have yet to
find an answer. Does anyone have any idea why for some
programs an incorrect icon is displayed under the Add /
Remove Programs list (Windows XP Pro SP1)? For example,
three of my installed Critical Updates have the icon for
Dark Age of Camelot, Trials of Atlantis (game) instead of
the default windows installer icon (monitor + cd-rom +
package icon). I know how to manually edit the registry
to assign a displayicon path, but does anyone know why it
is displaying the wrong icon to begin with? When I
uninstalled the DAOC game, the icons go back to the
correct windows installer default icon, but upon
reinstalling the game it goes back to displaying the
wrong icon. Is this a known issue or bug? Thank you.

Hi Morad,

Just curios, does the displayicon for this program have a - number? Either
way, could you post the uninstall key/values here for DAOC?

M

mhajii210

Thank you for your reply Kelly. No, the uninstall string for this
program does not have a displayicon value. Here is the information
you requested:

(Default) REG_SZ (value not set)
DisplayName REG_SZ Dark Age of Camelot - Trials of Atlantis

HelpTelephone REG_SZ (703) 934-0169 (11AM-8PM ET,
Monday-Friday)

Publisher REG_SZ Mythic Entertainment, Inc.

UninstallString REG_SZ C:\Mythic\Atlantis\UNWISE.EXE /U
C:\Mythic\Atlantis\install.log

URLInfoAbout REG_SZ http://support.darkageofcamelot.com

Even if I manually edit and enter a DisplayIcon path, I get the same
thing happening. I am well aware of the problem with a negative
number in the DisplayIcon path, and I checked all the uninstall
strings and none have the negative number. Any ideas please let me
know. Thank you!

Morad.

This is most interesting and I am very intrigued by this. And want to thank
you for your trial and error results and feedback. As for your notes, you
added a legit and safe displayicon path as to mean, one that works normally
in your list without this distraction?

That said, have you tried rimming out things such as HelpTelephone? If not,
that is where I would take it from here. Good luck and keep us posted.)

Hi Kelly.

What I meant to say is when I add a DisplayIcon path for the Dark Age
of Camelot uninstall string, then the icons for the Windows Critical
Updates are still the wrong ones. Of course, if I add a DisplayIcon
path for the critical updates pointing to
[C:\WINDOWS\system32\msiexec.exe], then the correct icon is displayed.
Seems to me that somehow the installation of the game is messing up
some of the icons displayed for other uninstall strings. Mainly, some
of the programs that normally use the default icon have switched to
using the DAOC icon instead. What's weird is that other programs that
also use the default icon are not affected. So in other words, only a
few of the programs have switched from using the default icon to the
game's icon. I will mess with it some more and see if I can figure
anything out. Again, if I uninstall the game then the icons go back
to the correct default icon. Thanks again!

Hi,

I understood exactly what you meant and what you are meaning now. Am
suggesting, messing with the other entries of the game to test. Note: This
is not the first program to do this. However, in my testing it had to do
with a - (negative) number. It would change other listed program icons as
well. Beings that find, changed all back to normal, I stopped testing.
Perhaps, I shouldn't have.(

Good luck and keep us all posted.

Well, I haven't been able to find anything. The only way I know how
to correct the problem is to manually assign a DisplayIcon path for
the uninstall program with an incorrect icon. I decided to E-mail
tech support for the game and here's what the rep said:

Hello,

This is an issue with the Microsoft Hotfixes and has yet to be
addressed by Microsoft so I do not have an answer for you. My

Windows XP Add / Remove Programs & incorrect icons

After installing Dark Age of Camelot Gold Edition, and the Trials of

the Windows Critical Updates are now showing the Trials of Atlantis

When I uninstall Trials of Atlantis, the icons go back to the previous

any ideas
as to why this is happening after installing DAOC? I have posted
newsgroup
messages and no one seems to know the answer. See

So as you can see according to the tech support for DAOC, this is a
known issue. I even tried deleting the uninstall keys using regedit.
Even after remove DAOC from the Add / Remove program listing, the
icons are still messed up. Therefore, I must conclude that there is
more to this than a negative sign somewhere messing things up. For
some reason Windows XP is assigning the wrong icon. I installed DAOC
on my notebook computer (Windows XP Home Edition) and the icons are
fine. Maybe because I had already installed the critical updates
before installing the game? No clue! Let me know if you can think of
anything else. Also, how can I report this as a bug to Microsoft?
Thank you!

Well it seems that they are all messed up now. I figured out a way to
mess up all of the Hotfix icons... by simply selecting remove and then
cancel. Once I do this, the icon for that particular Hotfix changes
to the icon for the DAOC game after closing the Add / Remove list and
opening it again! I was able to recreate the exact same thing on my
notebook pc (running Windows XP Home Edition)! So seems like there is
definitely a bug somewhere. Let me know if you can think of any
reason why this is happening. At least now I am able to pinpoint the
problem. Thanks.
