Add/Remove programs broken (Mshta.exe)

D

David Stokes

Running Win2K on a Dell Precision workstation.

Original install was using Dell OEM Win2K SP1.

Now running SP4 installed from Express download and all critical
updates also installed plus IE6

Add/Remove programs freezes and always get "Mshta.exe not responding
etc".

Can sometimes shut down with Ctrl +Alt+Del, sometimes not.

According to this KB

http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;EN-US;285195

might work and requires OEM setup CD.

Question:

will this rollback to SP1 and zap all updates, critical fixes etc etc
or do commands

sfc /purgecache
sfc /scannow

just repair "Add/Remove"

Any advice as I just need to know what I'm getting into.

Tks.

David,

System File Checker uses the same catalogs as Windows File Protection, which means it is aware of the updates and
should not replace them.

Before doing this you may want to run the following three commands from a Command Prompt as I have seen them resolve
this issue as well.

regsvr32 "C:\Program Files\Common Files\System\Ole DB\oledb32.dll"
regsvr32 C:\WINNT\system32\appwiz.cpl
regsvr32 C:\WINNT\system32\mshtml.dll
