"Associate a file type or protocol with a program" - Use this option to fine-tune default programs based on the file type or protocol. For example, you can have all .jpg image files open using a specific program, and .bmp image files open using a different program.

Sure can, My neighbor received a Word Perfect attachment (WPD extension)
which he can not open. He has Word but not Word Perfect.

I was able to open the file for him in XP by associating the WPD
extension with Word. Can't find where to do this in Vista.

There are at least two ways you can do this:
1) on a case by case basis...right click on the file, select "open with" and
choose the application.
2) on a "association from now on basis". It looks like the option has been
moved. In XP file association was in "Tools>Folder Options>File Types". In
Vista it's in "Start>Control Panel>Default Programs>Associate a file type or
protocol with a program". Does the same think as it did with XP.

WPD extension is not on the list. I don't see any way to add it and
associated it with a program as in XP.

If the APPLICATION is not loaded in your computer, it won't be in the list.
Association is made with programs already loaded. The concept is to find a
new application that will be run when the OLD file is selected. What is
your case? I lost track.

right-click on a file with the .wpd extension, select "Open with..."
if Word is not on the list, select
"Choose default program"
click on "Browse"
go to
C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\OFFICE11 (or wherever his version is
located)
and select Winword.exe
make sure the box is checked for "Always use the selected program to open
this kind of file"
