Ad-Aware 2008 released

Surely you jest, right???

Why would anyone put any program on your machine that --according to most
reliable sources-- doesn't do any good anyway? That's kind of a no-brainer,
isn't it?

you test it and tell us how it is <g>

I took 2007 off 40 computers because it was having so many problems

I try to be fair to all parties

I'm still waiting another week before installing your baby (SASW 4) ;-) as
I don't hold it in much higher esteem than 2007 as far as being fairly
useless is concerned.

Ad-Aware was the mother, and good in her day. I am always willing to give
an honorable product another chance to prove itself, I just don't want to be
the first ;-p

Opps, wrong Rob, I thought you were RobinB
Sorry

If you set a Vista disk in the CD tray upside down,
you can hear SATANIC VOICES!
But that isn't the worst of it,
if you set it the right way IT INSTALLS VISTA!

I'm not brave enough, I only have 1 work computer and 1 home,
No spares to play with :-(

I'll give it a test, but I'm not going to leave it installed--largely for
the reasons RobbL states.

When I've tested older anti-spyware apps on my systems recently, all they
ever find are a few cookies which don't bother me. I'm short of time, and
don't want to add to the number of things I need to track updates to, etc.

OK - here are the quick and very superficial results:

Downloaded once, and the download was corrupted. Downloaded again, and got
a good install. Updated, via the easy to find button.

Started a quick scan.

Since this was still going a half hour later when I was ready to grab my
laptop from the docking station and head home, I put the machine to sleep.

When I got home, and woke it up, Ad-aware had stalled on the file it was
looking at--the scan time advanced, but the scan never moved to another
file. Used task manager to kill that run, and started another.

When that one completed, it had found 482 items. 480 were tracking cookies,
2 were MRU lists.

When I asked it to remove the tracking cookies--I had some trouble with the
UI, and, in the end, the progam died with an error message.

I'll be uninstalling as soon as I finish this message.

This really is a very superficial look at this program--I'm quite sure that
a lot of good thought and work went into it, but it didn't work well for me,
and I really don't need to spend an hour scanning my machine for tracking
cookies that I am not particularly worried by anyeway...

Hi Tim

Here`s my few cents worth - FWIW.

Like Bill S this is just a superficial observation. Downloaded file was not
corrupted and I decided to throw caution to the wind and install over 2007. I
was surprised (in this day and age) to observe the installer made no
reference to the fact I already had 2007 on my machine - offering to
uninstall the previous version or upgrade accordingly. Installation wasn`t
without its problems either. You are offered two choices of who can control
scans etc. Anyone who uses the computer or yourself. When I chose the latter,
I received a Fatal Error dialog box - the title bar was in English but the
content was in Spanish - I think. Never was good at languages. BTW I had
previously chosen English as my preferred language. I am currently running a
Smart Scan which is at 183000 objects scanned, has taken 45 mins and found
two cookies. The progress bar tells me I`m halfway thru the scan. Seems to be
a bit heavy on system resources but my notebook is old by todays standards.
One final thing. I ended up with two Icons on my desktop - one for 2007 and
the other 2008. Had to clean up manually. I hope the scanning engine is
better than the installer.

.......... Further to my last. If I was a cynical person, I would be inclined
to think 2008 is just another updated version of 2007 in disguise ;) It is a
shame as I`m sure the guys are working hard to make it a good product. I was
an ardent user of Adaware SE Personal before WD came along. Still have the
execution file on my memory stick - great shame they don`t support it
anymore. Thats progress for you OR, is it?

I'd just like to add my thanks to you, Stu, and also to Bill for his post,
in reporting these experiments. I understand the spirit in which your
reports are made, and that they're not in any way comprehensive tests, but
given what we already know about AdAWare 2007, I personally don't need any
more than this.

Thanks, both of you - this is really useful stuff.

Hi Alan D

Pleased to have been of assistance with some (albeit) limited feedback.
Someone has to take the plunge - was always game for a challenge. I don`t
depend on my notebook for a living and the worst that can happen to me is the
arduous process of `starting over.` I hasten to add. I do have tried and
tested recovery procedures in place;)

well both of you convinced me not to try it
besides like Bill, I do not need another software just to get rid of
cookies, especially a unstable one
AVG 8.0 does that and so does superantispyware, and so does ccleaner
thanks guys for the testing

OUCH....but just as I suspected...stay with the good stuff:

'SuperAntispyware' is terrific in many ways, and yes, I did buy the Pro
Version because I believe we should all support the products that do what
they are intended to do without a lot of crap in them.

I also agree that Ad-aware was the pioneer, but things change as did those
companies who used to make stage coaches and buggy whips....that's just
life. Yippie cai ay!

FWIW, Ad-Aware notified me that an update was available and I downloaded and
installed the update. Took practically no time at all. I haven't scanned
with it yet since AVS scans take so long and I don't want to scan with both
at the same time. I have the Pro version, if that makes a difference. I
also have SuperAntispyware.
