Actual problems

My driver's not listed... assume there is an XP driver, but it was built
into XP, I never had to provide media. It's a fairly old printer; a NEC
SuperScript 1260 (laser).

I think one of the HP Laserjet drivers works. HP4 or 5 or maybe 2.
Only 300 dpi tho. I used it in 2000 on my 860 as the 2000 driver for
the 860 was buggy.

Jeff,

Yeah... bummer... there are only 4 NEC drivers listed and I think they're
all inkjet drivers, not laser drivers. Don't think that would fly... guess I
could try the XP drivers if I want to go through the pain of figuring out
what they are...

Thanks,

Lang

Mike,

Oh, yeah... had to buy a new scanner for XP. I'm fully cognizant of the
possible HW upgrades ahead. I'll weigh and balance the costs and make my
move when I've got funding for new HW or drivers are released for existing
HW. It's just a reality of major Windows OS upgrades. Those that whine about
it should stick with their current OS, whatever that may be.

Some products last longer than can be reasonably expected. My HP5L parallel
port printer, for instance. I would have though it would be trashed a few
years ago but it is still going strong. I really do not expect to see HP
release Vista drivers for this dinosaur.

But none do, not forever.
"stays up with drivers"
For how long?

There are many variables:
How many were originally sold.
How long ago was last sold
How many are still in use
Etc.
Those and other questions help determine if a company, any company, will
support a product when a change is needed.

They might though,
theyre supposedly coming out with a unidriver-one driver for all their
printing stuff.

If companies did that, they would not sell as much new stuff, and would
slowly go out of business.. the peripheral manufacturers like new OS'es
because it gives them justification to drop older stuff..

Many of you are forgetting that Windows Vista has not been released yet -
released to manufacturing is NOT released; released means you can walk in
somewhere and buy it. All of you who are using Vista RTM today are using it
as part of various early adopter programs. Wait until it's on the shelf
before you slam Microsoft or manufacturers for not having drivers.

Even then, you can't expect every driver on the day Vista comes out and
there may never be Vista drivers for some existing hardware. I'm sure
Creative Labs is not going to make Vista drivers for your original 1999
Creative Labs parallel port webcam.

We're not talking about a situation where circumstances beyond your control
have suddenly and unexpectedly stopped your PC and your hardware from
working. We're talking about something you have total control over the
upgrade. Plan. Research. Get drivers when they're available; get new
hardware if you're losing money by waiting for drivers or if you just want
to upgrade hardware anyway. When you have all the tools you need, then do
the upgrade. There's nothing written that you have to upgrade on the day
Vista hits the streets.

Eric,

Well, I don't do any high resolution printing on my laser... 300dpi should
do fine... thanks for the tip... I'll check it out.

John,

Valid point. And... my issue is more about XP Home than the printer
driver... because if hang that printer off an XP Pro box, I can print to it
from Vista, no problem.

For all you guys takes a little thinking about things to get the printer. the processor is adobe printgear so try another printer with it.
