Activex notices

I recently started receiving error messages about activex controls, including
"This page is running a potentially unsafe activex control..." I scanned for
viruses and spyware and my system is clean. I have unsigned and dangerous
activex controls set to disable in my security settings. I also experienced
a loss of my wallpaper and default signature in Outlook Express one time.

Is this a potential virus/spyware, or do I need to repair comcat.dll? If
that is the case, I'd rather not start messing with uninstalling/reinstalling
IE, can I leave the system like this? I don't see any effect on the pages I
visit.

Hi Eric,
If it aint broke don't fix it! Comcat.dll is used to install some old
versions of software from multiple floppy disks, so if you are reasonably up
to date you should no longer need it.

The error messages about Active X controls are quite normal. They should
also be followed by a prompt asking you if you want to accept them to be
downloaded to your puter. There should be information on the Message dialog
telling you who the publisher of the ActiveX control is and whether or not
there is a validated certificate for the control (the certificate is only
issued to publishers who have obtained certification that their software is
safe)

You should however consider some other protective software for your
puter(Norton, Trend Micro and many others) from viruses and a firewall (Zone
Alarms has a free version). But as always if its free don't expect it to be
the best.
