ActiveX and Windows Update

Graham Hoyle

Hi,

When I use Windows Update the Web page says "Checking for
latest version.... etc

Then a message box appears to say:

"Your current security setting prohibit running ActiveX
controls on this page..........wont display properly"

I press OK and the page changes to

"New Windows Update Software Required" with an "Update"
button.

Pressing this produces the ActiveX messagebox again and
then loops to the "New Windows Update Software Required"
page with "Update" button.

I can`t think of anything thats changed to make this happen
my PC is pretty much up to date as far as W/Update goes

I`ve set my internet options for security to the default
level but don`t really know what to do now.

Thanks
Graham Hoyle

Hi,
Further to my previous message. if I add the Windows Update
site to the Trusted Sites list. Pressing the Update button
produces a Security Warning asking if I want to Install and
Run what is probably the Update Software.

And that the puplisher cannot be determined because the
Authenticode signature was not found.

Pressing yes here to install just loops me back to the
"New Windows Update Software Required" page.

Thanks
Graham

First, perform a DISK CLEANUP:
(Start > Programs > Accessories > System Tools > Disk Cleanup)

Second, visit http://v4.windowsupdate.microsoft.com/en/default.asp
while using your Internet Explorer browser.

Review the troubleshooting tips in these articles:

Manually install the latest Windows Update controls:

For Windows XP:

Download the controls from: http://v4.windowsupdate.microsoft.com/cab/x86/unicode/iuctl.cab
and save them to your desktop.

Extract the .cab file following the steps below:

1. Go to the desktop and right click the iuctl.cab file.
2. Click "Open".
3. Select all the files listed.
4. Right click on them and click "Extract."
5. Point to a known location (like the desktop) and click "OK."
6. Go to the location you selected and right click the iuctl.inf file.
5. Click "Install."
