Active X and Virus infection?

S

S. Coogan

Hello -

2 things:

1) I'm trying to search for some items on eBay and every
time I try and search, it tells me:

"Your security settings prohibit running ActiveX
controls on this page. As a result, the page may not
display correctly."

How can I fix this????

2) I keep getting a pop up telling me I have a virus on
my computer but when I run AVG 6.0, nothing ever pops
up. I have SpyBlaster and Ad Aware 6.0 downloaded on my
computer and they don't seem to pick up whatever is wrong
either...

Thank you!

IE Options>Security tab>Custom level>ActiveX>
Download signed ActiveX controls: Prompt.
Download unsigned ActiveX controls: Disable.
Initialize and script ActiveX controls not marked as safe: Prompt or Disable
Run ActiveX controls and plug-ins: Prompt.
Script ActiveX controls marked safe for scripting: Prompt

For the pop-up window, which sounds like a suspicious Spyware Item:

Disable Windows Messenger Service (Win XP, W2k, NT)
http://www.itc.virginia.edu/desktop/docs/messagepopup/

or Disable WinPopup (W98 and ME)

1. Click Start > Search (or Find) > Find Files or Folders.
2. Search for the winpopup.exe file.
3. Right-click on the winpopup.exe file and rename it to "winpopup.bad" (or
whatever fun file extension you can think of).
4. Click Yes if prompted.
5. Restart the computer.
OR
1. Go to your Control Panel -> Add/Remove Programs -> Windows Setup ->
Accessories
2. Scroll down to the bottom of the list.
3. Uncheck the Winpopup.

You might want to install Spybot S&D.

Install, UPDATE immediately, and *Enable Protections* (Enabling Protections
must be done manually). Run the program; twice if need be. In Safe mode, if
that proves necessary.

Before proceeding further and removing anything, Download LSPFIX and
Winsockfix FIRST. This is to ensure you will be able to access the Internet,
if that would become disrupted by Spyware/ Malware.
Download LSPFIX from either of the following sites:

http://www.cexx.org/lspfix.htm
http://www.spychecker.com/program/winsockxpfix.html (For Win2k or XP)

Download Winsockfix here
http://members.shaw.ca/installations/WinsockFix.zip

Generally speaking, ONLY clean items which are displayed in RED. Do NOT
clean any Black or Green entries which may appear.

The same message? Do you mean the ActiveX message, or the pop-up which says
"you have a virus..."?

If you want to follow the careless, quick, and cavalier route, you can
enable all ActiveX. Or if you trust eBay (I wouldn't), add it to your
trusted sites zone. Only if ActiveX is thoroughly enabled will the "Do you
want to ....? This page may not display...." go away. When ActiveX is
disabled it still displays that message. There's no way around that which I
am aware of.
