activation XP Home

I just completed a new install of Win XP Home on a friends computer. Her
motherboard got fried and I replaced it. At the time I installed XP I didn't
have an internet connection so I was going to activate later. After
completeing the installtion a popup came up saying i had 30 days to
activate. I clicked on it to activate and the message said it was already
activated, but I keep getting the activate in 30 days message.
Since this is a new motherboard do I need to register the operating system
and or validate it? It was registered previously on this machine although
that was with the old motherboard. Thanks for the help

Your friend may have a "BIOS Locked" OEM version of Windows XP in
which case it cannot be activated unless the motherboard BIOS is from
the same OEM that produced the original computer.

However it may also be just a glitch in the activation itself.

Try repairing the registry entries for the .DLL files used by
activation:

Use Start- Run and enter the following text in the dialog box:
regsvr32.exe regwizc.dll

Then do it again with the following text:
regsvr32.exe licdll.dll

If that does not resolve the issue then try deleting the activation
control files from the hard drive:
c:\windows\system32\wpa.dbl
c:\windows\system32\wpa.bak

Then reboot the computer. Hopefully this time the activation will
work.

Good luck
