Ok, I bought a new Toshiba laptop last year preloaded with Vista. A week ago,
I noticed that the control panel was no longer opening up, and nor was the
built-in Chess Titans game, or the Personalize options by right clicking on
the desktop. To find out what was happening, I went to "System" by clicking
on the "Control Panel" from the link on the left once you open "My Computer".
It says there that Windows is not activated. I go...ahhh!! this must be the
reduced functionality mode then! I dunno what caused it, all I installed in
the past few weeks were some Windows Updates (btw, even Windows Update
doesn't work now). So I clicked on the "Activate Now" button, and a window
came up saying:
Error 0x80v070426
The service could not be started.
So I went to "Services", and manually started all the services that were not
started. When I started the SL UI Notification Service, I got the following
error message:
-----------------------------------------------------------------
An unauthorized change was made to Windows.
You will no longer receive notifications, including those about your license
and activation. Use the link below to find out how to fix your system.
Error: 0x80070426
Description:
The service has not been started.
------------------------------------------------------------------
And when I click on the link in the message, it takes me to the Windows
Genuine Advantage website. There, I click to find out whether my copy of
Windows is genuine, and it says that it is not.
Now, I'm pretty sure that Toshiba does not pirate software, so the only
valid explanation is that I must have installed some software on my laptop
that is incompatible with Vista (...and boy, there are tons of those!). So I
uninstalled pretty much everything I had installed on it the last month, and
even used System Restore to restore it to a previous date. However, the
System restore failed twice for some unknown reason.
So, keeping aside the incredibly dumb and absurd policy of Microsoft to
harass their customers by invalidating Windows the moment an incompatible
software is installed, can somebody please suggest me a way to activate
Vista? (I didn't know this, but it seems that I have to pay Microsoft to
utilize their technical support to fix a problem that was created by their
"genius" engineers and policymakers in the first place.)
