Activating Live Onecare

I am running the beta version of Live Onecare on Vista Ultimate RTM. I'm
trying to upgrade to the paid subscription but get the error that I must be
running XP to do so (error 1124). What's the deal to upgrading to the
regular feature?

Dan--

I think what you're running into is this. You didn't say what Beta version
of WOC Live you're running on Vista; I'm going to guess 1.5XXXX

1) WOC 1.0 RTM is basically geared to XP. Some people have run it on Vista
but with a higher incidence of glitches. They aren't
recommending/supporting it for Vista.

2) Some people have used WOC Live Betas with Vista that aren't 1.5 but with
a higher incidence of glitches. Most people had trouble loading most of the
prev. Beta builds onto Vista.

3) If you're using WOC Live 1.5XXXX on Vista, it's still in Beta. So you
cannot purchase an RTM yet; it doesn't exist--and that invokes Error 1124.
When they release RTM you will be able to purchase a subscription and won't
receive that error. I think that the "must be running XP" refers to the
only WOC RTM'd for purchase now, which is 1.0.

4) It appears that some of the 1.5 trials are expiring before the Beta ends,
and you can download another trial from http://ideas.live.com/ if you have
to, just using a different passport ID.

As to the way forward for WOC Live 1.5, the latest info I have is that it
will RTM the day that Vista rolls out to the general public, January 30,
2007. See this entry from the WOC Live team blog:

Chad,

Thanks. That did help a great deal.

My trial of WOC (yeah it's 1.5xxxx) expires before the end of the month, but
I can go into a hold pattern if as you mentioned the RTM will be out when
Vista goes live at the end of the month.

Again, thank you for the information.

I think that's the plan and unless it changes, you'll see promotion close to
release; and it probabily will be integrated into your WOC interface as well
as an email. If I see anything I'll add to this thread.

All good information, Chad, except that 1.1 *can't* be installed on Vista at
all. In fact, if one were to upgrade XP with OneCare 1.1 already installed, they
are in for some serious trouble as OneCare 1.1 will not run and can't be
uninstalled from Vista, either. The advice we give people who have encountered
this is to format the PC and install Vista fresh and then get the 1.5 beta.
The current release date is still set for 1/30/07. All 1.1 subscribers on XP
will be upgraded around that time, too, but I don't know if that will start
before 1/30 or not.

Steven--

Appreciate it. My advice though wasn't to install anything but 1.5 on
Vista. I saw this announcement today.

"Microsoft quietly announced this week that it has released version 1.5 of
its Windows Live OneCare security and antivirus offering to manufacturing.

That means that the upgrade is on track to be ready just in time to be
announced with the consumer release of Windows Vista and Office 2007 at the
end of the month. Not surprisingly, chief among the new features and
capabilities being added with 1.5 is compatibility with -- you guessed it --
Windows Vista."
