When you boot to the XP setup CD ROM, the first screen to appear
is the F6 screen. When you hit F5, the next screen states "Windows could
not determine the type of computer you have. Select from the list below..."
The list shows "Standard PC with C-Step i486" and below that is "Other"
It says to scroll thru the list and select one. I just tried that and it didn't
allow me to scroll thru the list...so it goes sometimes with Windows. At
any rate, the F6 screen comes up before the Repair-New Install screen.

I don't know if SP2 will keep that setup or wipe it out.

Yes there are dangers. I have no experience with a repair install so I won't
advise you on how to do that. I suggest that you start a new thread, as the
MVPs seem to be avoiding this one and my eXPerience is with fresh
installations only. Good luck.

Did you notice at the bottom of the first black screen that it said "to boot
from CD Press any key'?

no sorry didnt notice that started another post off about it.... been told
to press esc on first splash screen to get it to boot from cd.. might all be
a waste of time tho if at the end of the day i cant get to choose acpi type
ect will try tomorrow.......the other option was to click on my computer in
device manager / properties/ standard pc/ update drivers which should update
to acpi driver, but nobody i know has ever done this.....sounds dodgy if you

Trying to change the HAL in Device Manager is not a good idea. As I said
before, it's best to do this using XP setup. The procedure is described
step by step in one of the articles I posted links to earlier.
