Acessing WD NAS drive from "both ends"?

I have a Western Digital Mybook 2 TB NAS drive. Can be connected
to a network, which I have done, and will accept USB. Holds very large
video files.

Before I try it, can I have BOTH the network port and the USB cable
connected at the same time... safely?

This would allow me to access (via the USB) the drive by a single
machine and not load down my small network for other uses.

Thanks!

Most likely not, but check with the manufacturer to see if the hardware
can do something like that.

I would suggest sticking with Ethernet, and making sure you have a smart
data-switch (instead of a basic hub) as your connection-point, That way,
traffic between your computer and the NAS should not affect other network
ports.

Most of the better units these days are smart, that is they target packets
to one computer instead of 'shouting' across all ports.
