Accessing some URLs

H

Howard

For a month, my 6.0 IE browser can't access certain URLs,
altho it performs fine on most. Unfortunately, the URLs I
can't access are vital to my business. I've checked out
the URLs on another computer--no problems accessing on the
other machine. I uninstalled IE and reinstalled, but no
effect. A lengthy procedure given me by MSN interactive
support (follows below) didn't work either. Any possible
solutions? Thanks in advance, Howard.

Penny: It happens sometimes when the particular file which
is used to communicate with that particular server and
your computer is corrupted. You need to re-register it. I
will provide you the steps.
Click on Start and select Run.
Type regsvr32 softpub.dll and click on ok.
Please provide space regsvr32 and softpub.dll
Please provide a single space between regsvr32 and
softpub.dll
Now you need to optimize your browser settings. I will
provide you the steps.
1. Click Start, click Settings, and then click Control
Panel. 2. Click Internet Options.
3. On the General tab, click Delete Cookies in the
Temporary Internet Files section. 4. When you are prompted
to confirm, click OK. 5. Click Clear History. 6. When you
are prompted to confirm, click OK.
7. Click Delete Files. 8. Select the Delete all offline
content check box, and then click OK. 9. Click Settings.
Penny 10. Adjust the The amount of disk space to use
setting to 10 MB. 11. Click View Files. 12. When the View
Files window appears, press CTRL+A to select all the
files, and then press DELETE. 13. When you are prompted to
confirm, click Yes, and then close the window.
14. Click OK to close the Settings dialog box. 15. Click
the Security tab. 16. Click the Internet icon.
17. Click the Default Level button if it is available, and
then click Apply. Repeat this for the Restricted, Trusted,
and Local Intranet zones. 18. Click the Privacy tab. 19.
Click the Edit button. If the sites appear under Managed
Web sites, click Remove All in the Per Site Privacy
Actions window, and then click OK.
20. Click the Default button if it is available, and then
click Apply. 21. Click the Connections tab. 22. For each
item that is listed under Dial-up and Virtual Private
Network settings, follow these steps: a. Select the item
(the connectoid), and then click Settings. b. Clear all
the check boxes, and then click OK.
23. Click LAN Settings. 24. Clear all the check boxes, and
then click OK. 25. Click the Advanced tab. 26. Click
Restore Default, and then click OK.
Penny: I have finished sending you the troubleshooting
steps.

I too am having the same exact problem, and I also connect via dsl. I have
tried every fix I have seen on the net, the one I saw that you refer too said
to change yes or no to auto but it still didn't fix mine. I am running
windows 2000, and I agree it does get very old after a while.

Hi,
A few more steps you might try:
Shut everything (computer, modem, router, etc) down for 4 or 5 minutes- a
complete power down.

Delete the Temporary Internet Files folder.
http://mvps.org/winhelp2002/delcache.htm When that folder is recreated after
a restart, set it's size to about 50-60 MB. Delete the History folder (same
page.)

Are these sites in the HOSTS file?
See: The Hosts File (Gorilla Design Studio): http://www.accs-net.com/hosts/
Blocking Unwanted Parasites with a Hosts File:
http://mvps.org/winhelp2002/hosts.htm

Have you checked for malware? Work through the solutions (CWShredder,
Ad-aware, Spybot) at
http://mvps.org/winhelp2002/unwanted.htm Also note the security tips on that
page.

There may be other possible solutions at

Hope this helps,

To all that wonder why "page cannot be displayed" :
You do not state what firewall you are using
If you are using a firewall that has a privacy setting
that may be the reason why you have the result "page cannot be
displayed" or IE is slow to find the URL or display it.
The same problem has been bugging me since I upgraded my eTrust
firewall.
I have read every post on this issue and cleaned all my spy and adware
with everything that was reccomended.
Still there was no joy till I tweaked my firewall settings.
Believe me I have little hair left!!!
I hope this helps.........

I was merely suggesting it as another avenue to explore.
Every firewall has it own routine. So the user has to look into it and
experiment just like I did.
There is no blanket "cure all"

You see, my concern is that the sort of data blocked by privacy should not
be causing 'page cannot be displayed' errors. That is why I would like
further information via the privacy advisor that is built in to your
firewall.

here is a copy/paste from the Privacy advisor in the eTrust firewall:

Setting privacy protection levels
By setting the privacy protection level, you determine whether to
allow or block cookies, ads, and mobile code.

To set privacy levels:

Select Privacy|Main.

In the Cookie control area, click the slider and drag it to the
desired setting.
High Blocks all cookies except session cookies. This setting may
prevent some Web sites from loading.
Med Blocks persistent cookies and persistent cookies from tracking
Web sites. Allows cookies for personalized services.
Off Allows all cookies.

In the Ad Blocking area, click the slider and drag it to the desired
setting.
High Blocks all pop-up/pop-under and animated ads.
Med Blocks all pop-up/pop-under and animated ads. Allows banner ads.
Off Allows all ads.

In the Mobile Code Control area, select On or Off.

Click OK.

Sandi,

I tried my best to show you how I got to "devine" my results and to
let others who read the threads another lead to follow.
After poking and prodding and gleaning the NG for solutions and still
getting no results that improved my browser. I took a look at the
settings under privacy for the firewall on this machine.
I posted the categories that it covers and the levels that block or
pass cookies ads and animations.
The controls maybe a bit cryptic but they do work. It does take a bit
of experimentation and some trial and error on the users part.
As a result of my investigation, my browser is performing like it was
before I noticed the problems.
I am not as skilled as you but I do have the experience of using
various programs and can tell if the results I am getting are
acceptable.
You being an MVP may have more resouces than I and can probably get an
evaluation program to do the research and get those specific answers
you are asking for.
All in all I value the guidance you talented MVPs provide here. I have
found thru the years that the advice I have found here worth it's
weight in gold.
Have a prosperous and Happy New Year.
