Access Denied on slave drive

I have a friend's hard drive that is going bad. He needs his files backed up.
So I connected his drive as a slave drive on my computer so I could just copy
them to my system and back them up to DVD. The problem is that the files he
needs are in his My Docs folder, and I can't access them because he has a
password on his user account. I have the password but it doesn't allow me to
enter it, it just says Access Denied. Is there a way around this?

Yes, fairly simple although very wordy.

1. If you are using Windws XP Home you will need to boot into safe
mode befor you can do this
2. Go to Tools > Folder options > View and turnoff simple file sharing
3. You must be loged in as an administrator

This is the typing bit...
Once you have done the above, you then must open the properties of the
drive, then go to the security tab, then once here you will probably
get an error saying "you are not alowed bla bla bla..." egnor it.
clikc the advanced button, then go to the owner tab, selecte ither
administartor group or your self (it dosnt matter), make sure you
selecte the option "Replace owner on bla bla..." then clikc ok
(prepare for a wait depending on how many files where on the hard
drive). Now you are the owner, but still canot get at the files. What
you need to do now is give your self access clikc the Add button, type
in your user name and press ok, if it says you dont exsist, click
cancle, click advanced, then click find now, and selecte your self
from the list then clikc ok. Then in the lower box make sure you have
full access. Then befor clikcing ok click advanced one last time.
Clikc "Replace permisons entries..." and then clikc ok (again,
prepare for some waiting) then clikc ok again, you now have full
control of the files.

NOTE: You say the hard drive is diying, there is a chance that doing
this will kill it, becasue the hard drive has to go though all the
directorys and files changing the FS permisons :S, but it’s the only
way..., unless of course your prepared to install linux on your
computer as that egnors NTFS FS permisons.
