Access closes by itself

Hi,

Here's the situation: I'm happily working away at my Access app and Access
suddenly, without warning messages or save prompts, closes down. I can be
doing anything - coding in VBA, just viewing a report, building a form or
query, anything or nothing at all, and Access closes. I've had my computer
re-imaged by the techies which did not solve the problem. There are several
of us in the department that have had this happen and the only common
denominator is that we are all running Access 97 (which will not be upgraded
in the near future) and Windows XP. Has anyone heard of any compatibility
issues or anything that might account for this problem? Our IT team has all
but given up on it.

Thanks!

Have you looked in the Application Log to see what error was generated when
Access crashed? Does this happen only with one particular database or all
databases?

I'm not sure where to check the application log, but it occurs to me that the
IT guys checked it when I reported the problem to them and there was no error
logged. As for a particular database, this error does not discriminate; any
database on a Windows XP/Access 97 machine is at risk. It doesn't matter if
the mdb is on the network or on the local drive either.

I agree that your IT staff should have checked this, but perhaps not -
things slip by sometimes. At any rate, the application log can be accesses
by right-clicking on "My Computer" on the desktop, select manage, then
expand event viewer. Any time an application exits ungracefully (crashes to
the desktop) an entry should be generated.

Cool. Finally some validation! After all the "help" IT tried to give us, I
think they ended up just thinking we made the problem up.

Now that I've found an error log - which does include my latest Access crash
- what do I do with it? I clicked the link to send the error to Microsoft
which then said that they didn't have anyhelp on the issue.

Thanks for helping so far!

I should mention though that not all instances of Access crashing are
recorded. I can count on this happening daily if not more frequently, but
the log lists probably less than half of actual number of times Access has
crashed.

What's the error itself? There should be an error code, (numeric) and
source - also possibly further info in the details as to what file caused
the error - a dll or exe or somesuch. Google something like Access 97 1234
(assuming the error code is 1234!) and see if perhaps you can find an
article detailing the issue. MS may not have an article but chances are it's
been seen before by someone somewhere...
