Access Access 2003 - max fields in table error

Hi all,

I hope someone could point me in the right direction here! I cannot save a table, with well under 255 fields defined, as access tells me I've exceeded the maximum number of columns I can have.

Would compact and repair help?

Any help gratefully received!!

Sometimes when making a change to a field Access will create a new one and delete the old one "behind the scenes". I'd try compacting the database to force a field re-count and see if it helps

Thanks a lot Ian. I went back to the user and found out she'd been copying a previous database, deleting some fields and adding new ones annually for the last 4 years so I think you have hit the nail on the head there!
