Access 2003/2007 compatibility

I have a 2003 version database stored in a network drive. One of the users of
the database has Access 2007. He could log-in to the database
(password-locked) but was not able to navigate to some of the forms. What is
the possible reasons? I thought Access 2007 is able to read 2003 version
database?

Thanks,
Valerie

i have seen issues where if you created an automatic switchboard in
2003, it didnt work in 2007 and we had to recreate the switchboard as
a normal form. does your database utilize any switchboards?

Hi,

Many thanks. The 2003 verseion does have a switchboard, the switchboard was
created by putting command buttons on a normal form.

How should I re-create a switchboard? in Access 2007?

2007 can indeed do so - but it's much pickier about security. If the database
has ANY VBA code in it (such as a Switchboard), it will only work if the
database is in a "Trusted Location" or has been digitally signed (most aren't
signed).

See the Help on "Trusted Location" for details of how to set this up.

Given that you are using command buttons recreating the switchboard
won't make a difference for you.

Also note that the Auto FE Updater can create the Trusted Location for
the users automatically.

Would user be able to access the database through Access 2003 or Access 2007
after using the Auto FE updater and database being moved to Trusted Location?

Many thanks for your help!

If it was built in Access 2003, then an Access 2007 user can probably open
the db successfully. Test it with your db to see for sure. More recent
Access versions know how to update the VBA references from older Office
versions. But once it has been opened in A2007, it probably cannot be opened
in A2003 without manually editing the VBA references. Years ago I added code
to check and update references for older Office versions, but it was a bit
fragile and I thought not really worth maintaining.

If you go the route of users working in both Access versions, you have to
make sure each user has their own local copy of the FE and no one ever opens
the master copy on the server.

Paul (and Valerie),

As long as the database built in Access 2003, as opposed to upgraded to, AND
it remains version 2003 you can flip back and forth and the References
should *fix* themselves. I do it all the time, when I forget which version
I opened last and my 2003 opens in 2007. HOWEVER, if any design changes are
made to the database via 2007 then you probably should check the References,
though I always design in the version of the master so I have no first hand
experience.

I also have the scenario where some people have 2003 and some people have
2007, they MUST have their own copy of the front end or that will be *very*
nasty.
