about vs.net2003 or above

The official minimum requirements are detailed here:-
http://msdn.microsoft.com/vstudio/productinfo/sysreqs/default.aspx

While it should work with 256mb you should consider 512mb if you can. You
may find however that although your machine meets these minimum requirements
for RAM and CPU, it may not be a pleasant experience. Note also that you'll
need several gigabytes of hard disk space to install Visual Studio and more
if you install the online documentation (which I would recommend).

I want to use vs.net 2003 or above to develop for ppc2003 or smartphone.
The following configuration is from My PC at home:
CPU: PIII 667
RAM: 128M SDRAM
I know I must upgrade my hardware, but I want to save a little money.
I upgrade RAM to 256M or 512M only, and Can it work well?

I used to use VS.NET 2003 Pro on my P4 2.8GHz with 512Mb of RAM. It was
useable. For my scenario, I also had to have Sql*Server and IIS running
too, and often needed a 2nd copy of VS.NET running so I could debug
WebServices at the same time.

IF you have a really fast hard disc, I think you'll be fine. My laptop
doesn't and I would spent ages just watching the hard disc light flash
while I Alt-Tabbed between apps. I just upgraded to 1Gb of RAM and it
has made an unbelievable difference. I am much happier now, and hardly
ever scream incoherently at the machine while waiting for a simple
operation to complete :)

So, provided you are not running lots of other memory hungry
applications, 512Mb should be workable.

It should work, but will be quite unpleasant. Consider upgrading to at
least Pentium IV 2000 with 512 MB.
Also, if you're running Windows 9x, you would have to upgrade to at least
Windows 2000 Pro.

Best regards,

Ilya

I have been using a p4 1.6GHz with only 256MB. Performance is quite slow,
and the company I'm contracting for is upgrading it to 1GB (my
recommendation). 512MB will be satisfactory for running one copy of VS.NET
most of the time, even if you have SQL Server as well. Processor speed will
probably be an issue mainly during compilation.

I think it depends on your projects sizes.

I use Win XP SP1 with a DELL Laptop PIII 450 MHz, 320 MB of RAM and a 40 GB HDD, and I find this fast enough for my own purpose. It's just a little bit slow to start VS.
