Lunix

I have an Athlon 64 3000+ with 512 megs ram (2 256m in dual
channel mode) and am running Windows 2000 SP4. I'd like to experiment
with Lunix, but have never used anything except Knoppix 3.9. I've
been working with computers since the Timex Z81 and PCs since DOS 3.x
days, have a good working knowledge of hardware and software, so setup
and configuration of software isn't a problem for me. What I'm
looking for is suggestions for a good and inexpensive version of Lunix
that I can install in a dual boot configuration with 2000 (or
possibly, shutter the thought, XP, as I want to stream video and audio
to my iPAQ, that 2K doesn't seem to support). I don't want to invest
a lot of cash into Lunix until I know if I like it or not.

Also is 512 megs of ram enough to get started? I do plan to
upgrade my system to 1 gig soon (2 512m PC 3200) and bumping my
current ram to my wife's P4. I would like to upgrade my HD first
(only 80 megs) before the memory, but if the memory is more important,
I can wait.

Thanks.

Your box will run both 32 bit & 64 bit versions of linux, so any number of
possibilities should work. IIRC, the iPaq is a WindowsCE PDA, isn't it?
There is some support for that in linux, but much more & much better
support for Palm.

Concensus seems to be that it's better to use separate drives, but separate
partitions on a large drive will work, too. Most linux stuff does fine
with 512 meg of RAM, but going to 1 gig won't hurt. :)

The suggestion to try linuxiso.org is a good one. Also check out
distrowatch (I forget if it's com or org). There are reviews, plus links
to the various distro homepages. Some don't make it to linuxiso, although
there are downloadable versions & some (like Mandriva) don't put the latest
on linuxiso.

In any case, have fun.

You don't have to invest any cash, you can download Linux free. I switched
to Linux about 4 years ago and never looked back.

Yes.
