about:Blank

Hi Group,
I'm having trouble removing "about:blank" It sets itself as my homepage in
IE and I can't change it. I had it before and I got a fix and it worked. I
ran an exe file and removed an entry from the registry and that was it.
Didn't work this time. Any ideas will be appreciated.

Bob,
Download and run CWShredder from
http://www.spywareinfo.com/~merijn/downloads.html

Info on aboutblank at
http://www.spywareinfo.com/~merijn/cwschronicles.html#aboutblank

There's another version of aboutblank that CWShredder can't remove. The
(involved) removal process is laid out at
http://forum.aumha.org/viewtopic.php?t=5094&highlight=

If you need help with the removal process, work through steps 1-6 at
http://www.aumha.org/a/quickfix.htm then read this
http://forum.aumha.org/viewtopic.php?t=4075 then post a HijackThis log to
the forum at http://forum.aumha.org/viewforum.php?f=30

See: http://mvps.org/winhelp2002/unwanted.htm
and http://www.aumha.org/a/parasite.htm for security tips.

Hope this helps,
Don

Forget going to the suggested sites to change your home page. This is all you have to do: When you set the address for your home page in Internet Options, DON'T click "use current", "use default", or "use blank". After you enter for example www.yahoo.com, go directly to the bottom and click "apply", then OK, and that's it. Makes me wonder about the affiliations of the people who responded earlier. Hope this helps.

You know, it would be nice it killing the "about.blank" hijacker were
that easy. You must remove the malware or it will just keep coming
back. Here are some generic removal instructions:

Remove spyware with Spybot Search & Destroy from
www.safer-networking.org and Ad-aware from www.lavasoftusa.com. Be sure
to update these programs before running them. These programs are free,
so run them both since they complement each other. It is best to run
antivirus and spyware removal tools in Safe Mode. You may also want to
run CWShredder and HijackThis from http://aumha.org/freeware.htm.
Although CWShredder is no longer being updated, it will still clean
older variants of the CoolWebSearch malware. I also find that a
combination of HijackThis and AboutBuster (which you can get from
MajorGeeks) is efficacious with this malware. Please read the
instructions carefully. Also, make sure you've visited Windows Update
and applied all security patches. Do not install driver updates from
Windows Update. Make sure you are running a firewall and have a current
antivirus installed using updated definitions.
