Forget going to the suggested sites to change your home page. This
is all you have to do: When you set the address for your home page
in Internet Options, DON'T click "use current", "use default", or
"use blank". After you enter for example
www.yahoo.com, go directly
to the bottom and click "apply", then OK, and that's it. Makes me
wonder about the affiliations of the people who responded earlier.
Hope this helps.
You know, it would be nice it killing the "about.blank" hijacker were
that easy. You must remove the malware or it will just keep coming
back. Here are some generic removal instructions:
Remove spyware with Spybot Search & Destroy from
www.safer-networking.org and Ad-aware from
www.lavasoftusa.com. Be sure
to update these programs before running them. These programs are free,
so run them both since they complement each other. It is best to run
antivirus and spyware removal tools in Safe Mode. You may also want to
run CWShredder and HijackThis from
http://aumha.org/freeware.htm.
Although CWShredder is no longer being updated, it will still clean
older variants of the CoolWebSearch malware. I also find that a
combination of HijackThis and AboutBuster (which you can get from
MajorGeeks) is efficacious with this malware. Please read the
instructions carefully. Also, make sure you've visited Windows Update
and applied all security patches. Do not install driver updates from
Windows Update. Make sure you are running a firewall and have a current
antivirus installed using updated definitions.
