A7N8X Deluxe Shutdown?

J

JM

Lo all had this board for nearly 6 months now and has been fine. Last night
I decided to install it in a new case (Antec PlusView 1000AMG ) and at the
same time a new hard-drive (Maxtor DiamondMax Plus9 Serial ATA 160GB 8MB
Cache ). My old case I noticed was very hot after a few hour's of use.

Now after I installed everything including windows XP my system started to
shutdown? This seems to be intermittent longest my system has stayed on for
is 3Hrs. I have tried a different PSU and still the same. Also tried
disconnecting everything so it was just the board and PSU , but still the
same?

My system comprises:

OS: Windows XP Service Pack 1
Motherboard: ASUS A7N8X Deluxe BIOS (Original when bought)
Memory: TwinMOS 512MB (2x256MB) DDR PC3200 Dual Channel Kit
Graphics Card: Connect3D ATI Radeon 9800Pro 128MB
Sound Card: Creative Sound Blaster Audigy 2 ZS 7.1 THX
Hard-Drive: Maxtor DiamondMax Plus9 Serial ATA 160GB 8MB Cache
PSU: Antec TrueBlue 480W

If anyone has had a similar experience please could you share it and if so
how did you resolve it?

Regards Jimmy

Forgot to mention I'm using a AMD Athlon "Thoroughbred" XP 2600+ 333FSB
(Socket A)

Did you use extra brass standoffs under the motherboard ? You should
only install brass standoffs where they line up with a hole in the
motherboard. Otherwise, an extra brass standoff can short to a conductor
on the bottom of the board. If it was a power conductor, the power
supply could be overloaded and eventually shut down on overheat or worse.

Also, recheck your processor and heatsink install. If the heatsink is
not installed the right way round, or is tilted, or the gap between
processor and heatsink isn't filled with a thermal interface material,
that could cause the CPU to shutdown on overheat as well.

You've selected a good power supply, so unless it is suffering from
"infant mortality", that shouldn't be the cause of your problems.
Try feeling the air temp coming from the PSU - if the air flow is
really hot, or the metal parts of the PSU are too hot to leave
a finger on them, something in the computer could be drawing more
than the normal current. There has been the odd post about the
video card sometimes doing this, but even if you swap in another
video card, that won't necessarily identify the video card as
the only culprit inside the computer.

Thanks for your replys. I was unable to reply properly due to the system
closing down. I have checked the CPU and M/B Temps from the BIOS and ASUS
"PC Probe" from within XP.

Case with side door off:
CPU: 46C/114F
M/B: 26C/78F.

Case with door on:
CPU: 55C/131F
M/B: 31C/87F

Installed extra fan on door & left PC on overnight:
CPU: 28C/82F
M/B: 24C/75F

When checking the cables I noticed that the heatsink on the northbrige was
hotter than the CPU heatsink?

Had similar problem on an A7N8X-E Deluxe, shuting down from some seconds to
some minutes.
Uninstalled CPU cooler (Zalman CNPS7000A-Cu), and re-installed it with
ArticSilver III thermal compound instead of the one sold with the cooler.
CPU temperature from BIOS dropped down from 50-52°C to 40°C in idle, and I
since have no more shuting down problems.
I suspected the PSU, the alim for the SATA HD (too), the alim for the fans
controlled by the MB, but that's the only certain clue I have.
Contacted ASUS support, who told me that the C.O.P. feature (CPU
Overheating Protection) triggers at 70°-80°C, which indeed seems rather
higher than the idle temp.

Cheers Kafe for your reply m8 ) I have had no further shutdowns since
installing the extra fan, but I will follow your steps if I do m8.
