I'm using the SATA raid with 2 drives on the MB.
Just enter the raid setup during boot. Setup a
stripped array and add your single drive.
save the array and reboot. Since your using a raid
controller I would think you still need the raid drivers.
And do you have the jumper on the MB set to enable
the RAID SATA controller?

When installing XP, you need to select 'provide oem driver on the initial
startup' (or whatever it says) to recognise the drive.

setup refuses to all any configuration for a signal drive.
are we doing something wrong?
We have no intention to run rundant or anyother RAID conf.
just a single , SATA drive.
eg: setup bios.
load XP
that is all we are trying to do.

The only SATA controller on the A7N8X is a RAID
controller. There is no setting in the BIOS for it.
There is a jumper on the MOBO to disable/enable it.
If it's enabled at some time during boot you'll see a
screen saying press a key ( can't remember the exact one)
to enter RAID setup. The hard drive won't be seen until
you set the jumper to enabled and create the array as I
stated before. And as Pug said you need to have your
drivers on a floppy and press F6 when XP setup asks
on the bottom of the screen.

I'm running a single SATA drive on this board. I didn't have to do any
"RAID setup" or enter the RAID BIOS. The only confusing part is to
understand the that drivers are called RAID even though you're not using
RAID. And you have to load the SATA XP drivers first thing during Windows
Setup.

As far as I know, it should work if you:

1. Set the jumper on the board to enable the SATA controller (default).
2. Cable the drive (power and data cable).
3. Drive should be recognized by SATA BIOS right after ASUS splash screen.
4. Boot from Windows XP CD.
5. Press F6 when is asks for OEM and third-party drivers.
6. Insert SATA drivers floppy when it asks.

Some have said that you need to set the boot device to SCSI in the BIOS, but
mine will boot from the SATA drive as HDD0. I think there is some kind of
mirroring going on.

Thanks
That's interesting to know about not having to set a RAID
array for a single drive. I had setup a single drive, but created the RAID
array. Didn't try without it. I guess
I assumed since I was using a RAID controller I needed to
set up a RAID array.

I only had to set the BIOS to boot from scsi when I had
a hard drive on the PATA port and one on the SATA, with just one drive on
the SATA port it boots as drive HDD0 as you say.

I wonder if it make a difference in windows (speed or
otherwise) if you setup the RAID array or not for
a single drive.

You need to copy the SATA drivers from the setup CD to a floppy.
Then during the XP install procedure watch carefully and you will see the
message that says push F6 to load other drivers...at which time XP will read
that floppy and install the SATA drivers and install properly.
this worked for me.In the BIOS I have CD as 1st boot device and HD0 as 2nd.

Hi folks,
I'm having EXACTLY the same problem with an A7N8X-deluxe and
a Maxtor 120gig SATA Hdd. This is my 1st build and I'm finding it
difficult to get windows (XP) installed as, when I try to install my
OS, all I get is "Windows did not detect a hard drive on your
computer". The Bios detects a hard drive but, windows don't.
If anyone could put in basic terms what I have to do, Please
post or E-mail me, as I'm tearing my hair out! o:(

Can't be much different then any other board...
Set Jumper(s) on the mobo.
Set BIOS to boot from SCSI or RAID or what have you.

IIRC the SATA is called SCSI in the Asus BIOS, I could be wrong though.

Er, no...
Where do i get the driver from? Motherboard came with a disc
which i assume i can only use when windows is installed? I am going to
look on the disc (on my other P.C.) to see if i can find a SATA
driver, copy it to floppy and try this(as per previous postings)
Please forgive my ignorance, any advice is most welcome.

You can get them off the mobo CD and copy them to a floppy, but you might
want to just go out and get the latest from the net and avoid upgrading
later. Ben and others have posted various places you can get them and the
specific file names. If you can't find them, ask again and I'll look the
files up. You need just a few off the CD and they easily fit on a floppy,
but it wasn't obvious to me exactly which files off the CD were the ones, so
search back.

When you boot from the Windows XP setup CD, pay attention! Very early on
there will be a very brief prompt to hit F6 if you want to install
third-party drivers. You have about three seconds to notice it and hit F6.
From this point on, just following the prompts and leave the drivers floppy
in the drive.

I am getting all this, 3rd hand, but my friend Chris S. said.
I issued F6 command, and "S" command to XP home at setup.exe run and
it
asks for a floppy.
He says there is no way to tickle the Browse path to CDROM( he has a
DVD drive that is running XP-HOME Setup.exe at that moment).

I told him, to find the drivers and see if it will fit on a floppy.
examining Asus CD , it seems they might just fit.
it is a shame that ASUS , readme file , does not tell how to install
XP.
just says load drivers.
Crappy docs' , ASUS used to be very good at this , now ....
Life on the bleeding edge. Fun...
Aby Normal.

will report results. including , details for the other poor XP people.
I run linux so , I feel your pain.

If you dont have the orig. CD
here is the source.
Use this procedure.
GO HERE:
http://www.asus.com/support/download/item.aspx?ModelName=A7N8X Deluxe

download, , this >>> v10022.zip
in the zip file ,
copy everything from this zip folder
except the *.pdf and the Gui folder. ( gui is for after XP installation)
the files are
Si3112r.*
SIISUP.vxd
txtsetup.oem
readme.txt < notice it tells how to load the F6 driver but
DOES NOT tell how to make the floppy, THANKS ASUS !

end of story.

Mark,
Thanks for the insight into my problem, Also thank you to the
previous postings as with all problems, It's nice to know your're not
alone!...

You seem to have a damn sight more knowlege than myself so, I
thought I'd better bring you up to speed as to my latest misfortunes.
(Win 98se)

Booted up my 200Mhz P.C. (You can see why I want to upgrade!) and
ran the Asus disc supplied with my motherboard. A DDL. error on
initial startup but, Click O.K. sorted that.
I was able to search the C.D.ROM and found the SATA drivers.
Going in futher to this folder I found a file for "diskettes" I copied
disk 1 & disc 2 to floppy and set-up my system with my new "tower?"
Booted from the windows C.D; Pressed F6 at the correct time, (You were
right, Very little time before the chance has gone) Got further than
I've got before and pressed "S" to load the drivers for SATA.
At this point I recieved the message "The file txtsetup.oem"
could not be found. press "S" or esc etc, etc, etc.
After searching through the disc, I could not find this file or
any clues to my problem. After much, much, searching I found a
reference to an SATA installation disc. Can I get this from the Maxtor
site or do I look elsewhere. My HDD was supplied in a nice blue shrink
wrapped plastic cover,and nothing else.
I know I'm a pain but, I've had little advice from anyone else
that makes sense.
As basic as you would like to make it!
Thanks in advance

Copy the files in CDdrive:\Drivers\SATA except GUI
folder to a floppy. You also don't need the .PDF file unless you want it.
Then it should work for you. I had the same
problem.

You're close, you just aren't getting the right set of files. I'd look at
the CD myself but I can't locate it at the moment. I'm sure previous posts
(or someone here) will cover it.

Hi, all you clever folks!
You were right!.. Using my new system now,
Can't thank you all enough. Copied over all the files onto floppy, It
still asked for the file "si3112r.sys" but I just used the find
command to get the required file and copied it over to floppy and,
BINGO!..
Once again, thank you all for your support and
taking the time out to help a newbie.
