A shared folder won't show up in my computers "MY Netwotwork Place

On my computer I have a folder - C:\Documents and Settings\Pete
Carr\SharedDocs that I have shared and it will not show up on my computers
"My Network Places" BUT it shows up and can be opened from my sons computer.
His shared folders do show up on my computer but not the folder I have shared.

Note: I can share other folders or drives and they DO show up in My Network
Places. But not the one I WANT to share? Is this folder not able to be shown
for some reason and if so why? I used to do it...
How can I get the folder I mentioned in the first line to show up on my
computers My Network Places??? Thanks a million ; Pete Carr

For many years, Microsoft shares have been inconsistent in the manner you've
described. I recommend all share names be 8 chars or less, with no gaps or
funny characters. KISS principle applies, IOW.

There are "share permissions" to contend with, furthermore. A "Pro" o/s in
the host also presents NTFS permissions. Username/password doesn't seem to
be a problem, because you say you can see OTHER shares in the host, on the
errant viewer computer. But I'd definitely look into the share permissions
on that problematic shared folder, to verify wide viewing permission.

Did you go to a cmd prompt in the errant viewer computer? Type net view
\\computername there, and see if your phantom share shows up.

Keep us posted.

Good luck.

Pete,

Inconsistent share visibility can be a sign of a master browser conflict. You
can frequently diagnose a problem, using logs from "browstat status" and
"ipconfig /all", from each computer. Read this article, and linked articles,
and follow instructions precisely (download browstat!):

A share that's part of "C:\Documents and Settings\" will need non-Guest access.
Which of the following is on each computer? XP Home, XP Pro with Simple File
Sharing, XP Pro with Advanced File Sharing? Why do you want to see your own
shares in your MNP anyway?

Thanks guys,
I have just read your post and they are probably what I should do to do this
right.
But last night I did get it working and also got my HP printer to show up in
both mine and my sons computer along with the shared docs folder I couldn't
get to show up.
What I have done may not be the "right" way to do it but it works. I set my
computer to see invisable folders and I found one called "Nethood" like this
C:\Documents and Settings\Pete
Carr\Nethood. I copied the SharedDocs folder and also found my HP printer
share and copied it into the same folder. When I opened up the HP printer
that I copied into Nethood and opened on my sons computer it obliviously
poped up a window to copy the printer drivers to my sons computer. Now my
son can print to my printer and we both can see and share the above mentioned
folder that I wanted to share. It was easy to do but maybe not the right way
etc. But at least it works well. I won't to see the Shared Docs and all
other shares on my computer because it just gives me feedback and I know that
they are shared. Just a visable way to see the net setup etc. This is a new
install of XP and I used to be able to see the Shared Docs folder in my past
XP setups so I wanted to see them in "My Network Places" again. Just lets me
know what we have shared etc.

Thanks guys. If I have done this wrong (but it works fine) let me know and
I will try and do it the way XP is "supposed" to do it. I would "rather" do
it the "right" way that XP recomends in its usual way of handling net shares.
I don't won't problems to occur because I may have it setup wrong. (But it
does work fine so far)

Thanks again and look forward to your feedback.
