A question re Epson C64

Hi all:

I bought an Epson C64 printer about a month ago and it worked ok. The black
cartridge
showed as almost being out of ink about a week ago, so I disconnected the
printer because I don't want to buy another black cartridge right now and I
didn't want to run it completely dry. There is no compatible cartridges in
the stores here yet for this printer (I am in Toronto), and the refill store
I checked with, doesn't have the ink for it yet. So I will wait.
The 3 colored cartridges are still half full. I have been using my old Canon
in the meantime.
Tonight, I connected the Epson to make sure the black ink cartridge hadn't
dried up and to print a page. But instead of showing the black cartridge on
the screen as having very little ink,as it was before, it now shows it as
being completely full. This is not going to be too good if the printer is
going to show cartridges as being full when there is no ink them. Is this a
common problem with Epson Printers, or is the printer not working properly
as far as judging cartridge inks? I would really appreciate feedback.

I find the "ink low" reminder messages really irritating and always "click
off" the message and keep going until the tank is actually empty.

At that point my C64 will not print until the empty cart has been changed.
Assume that is a standard "feature".

I have not found the messages actually inaccurate. May it be the offending
cartridge is not seated in the cradle quite right?

The monitor shows an average of the ink remaining. I would look at the
flashing light that comes on when the ink gets low. When it runs out it
stays on solid. At that point you wouldn't be able to print anymore. There
would still be ink in the cartridge though to prevent the head from burning
up.

When I had the printer connected before, it showed the black cartridge as
being almost empty and it had been getting lower and lower as time went by,
so seemed to be correct to me. The red light kept flashing for a few days
before I disconnected the printer and connected my old printer. I was
thinking that I will use my old printer for now and get the Epson black
cartridge refilled when they get the ink, so don't want to let it get too
empty as they say if that happens, the cartridge can't be refilled. Maybe
Brian is right when he says the black cartridge may not be in the holder
properly. I will have to check it closer.
Thanks for your input.

Hi Brian:
and this

I find the "ink low" reminder messages really irritating and always "click
off" the message and keep going until the tank is actually empty.

It is a bit irritating, but its good to know in a way if you want to get the
cartridge refilled.
Most newer printers and some older ones have this feature.
At that point my C64 will not print until the empty cart has been changed.
Assume that is a standard "feature".

So you have a C64 as well? When the cartridges are empty, do you get them
refilled, use compatible cartridges or buy Epson cartridges? I think I might
get mine refilled. There is a small store near me which does refilling
cartridges and I got my Canon cartridge refilled there and so far, it seems
ok. Half the price of Epson cartridges. They don't have the ink for the C64
yet, but they say they will have it soon. And since I can use my Canon
printer for now, I am not in a great rush. My Canon printer will only print
in black though as I have a black only cartridge in it. The color cartridge
needs a new printhead, which costs the same as a new printer. Thats why I
bought the C64 in the first place.
I have not found the messages actually inaccurate. May it be the offending
cartridge is not seated in the cradle quite right?

I will check it closer today just to see. If it is not that, I will email
Epson support and see what they say. Thank you for your message.

So far (and I've only had it a month) I've only used real Epson carts though
they are VERY expensive for what they are.

On my old Canon 2000, I used Canon carts for the colour side (3 colours in
one tank) and compats for the black side.

That said, after several years, I have now clogged up the pad under the jets
and it needs changing to clear a "collector tank full" message that a kind
soul here told me about.

I bought the C64 to get me going again pending fixing the Canon and must say
I have been pleased with it so far.

Hi there!
I've tried to refill Epson C64 but I guess I killed it.
So do not try to refill cartridge.
If you have time left, return it asap. You can try to refill not
original cartidge (but I don't have any experience with them).
